Why is my MacBook Pro making this noise?

Asked by Palindrome (1084points) December 10th, 2010

I just recently got this MacBook pro as a gift. I keep noticing this I’m thinking it’s just the fan because it sounds like the fan. But I just got this mac and this is my third day of having it. This is my second time actually using it. Is it suppose to make this sound? It’s not a really loud sound, but it is bothering me. Maybe I’m just being paranoid. Like I keep thinking “What if they sold me a used/refurbished mac when I actually bought it for new”...“I wonder if anyone else’s mac makes the same noise” just stuff like that. I mean isn’t it suppose to be silent? Oh and every time I pick it up or slant it the sound gets louder and more noticeable.

Um. You recently got this Mac as a gift. and your hearing a strange noise..
Well first of all. If you got a brand new computer as a gift it shouldn’t be making any noise. Other than when you turn it on and the fan. Plus seeing that the computer is new you should contact Apple on their website and tell them the problem. Your 1 year warranty that the company gives you will help.

As a gift I mean someone paid the money for me to get a Mac.

Check if it has warranty. If so apple should cover all the hardware/software problems

If it’s new, it’s under warranty. Call Apple.

Yep, that is what warranties are for.

What does this phantom sound sound like? All you’ve told us is that it sounds like the fan, but are there other details? Is it: grating, rubbing, soft, sharp, dull, metallic, plastic-sounding, etc.

Well it’s like a ticking sound. Almost like the fan is hitting something.
& thanks everyone.

Did you ever call Apple?

camertron's avatar

How close together are the ticks?

Palindrome's avatar

Well it was like it was constantly hitting something whenever the fan was operating. My problem is fixed though because we went to the apple store and they exchanged it for another one. Thanks everyone. I just told them what the problem was, & also that my wireless wasn’t working, but now I’m using the one they just recently gave me and it’s working fine.
