What happened to the popularity of Bratz dolls?

Asked by jca (36062points) December 11th, 2010

About 5 years ago, Bratz dolls were so popular, new, growing in popularity. Barbie was on the decline. There was an article in the NY Times about Bratz coming up and Barbie declining. Now, I was in Walmart yesterday and this is the holiday season, and I saw lots of Barbie and very little Bratz. Might it be because Bratz look like hookers and parents don’t like that?

I wasn’t looking to buy them, just making an observation.

Things come and go in waves, just like fashion. Are beanie babies, Cabbage Patch kids, and Rubik’s Cubes as popular as they used to be? It’s always something new, to feed the human need for novelty.

@laureth Actually, Rubik’s cubes are pretty popular now. They’re even coming out with a lot of variations.

I chalk the decline of Bratz popularity to a small amount of collective sanity in consumers. very small

Each area is still going to be different, but in general they are still popular, I heard on the radio that they are still in the Top 5 most wanted gifts for girls.

Perhaps as mankinds minds are growing smaller the demand for dolls with grossly disproportionatly large heads is decreasing?

I didn’t realize Bratz dolls were ever popular. Until I read this post, I forgot they existed.

I totally noticed this myself the other day. As much as I would like to say that it’s because Barbies are classic, I think it’s because they revamped their style. After Bratz dolls came out Barbie had to come up with something as equally edgy and cool in order to hold their own. They now have many different lines of Barbie that seemed to be geared toward older girls like Bratz were and I think this increased their popularity again. I mean, the Bratz haven’t changed at all since they came out, but with Barbie there is always something new.

It’s actually CRAZY. I doubt that it has anything to do with the dolls actual popularity but rather the fact that Mattel and the Bratz creators are suing each other like crazy. At one point, Mattel had an injunction requiring recall of Bratz products.

The basis of the dispute is the fact that the creator came up for the idea for Bratz while working at Mattel. But it’s a serious Barbie vs. Da Bratz catfight.
