I was browsing through my applications and I noticed the icon was gone. It just shows this. I don’t use it but I was just wondering what happened to it since I haven’t fiddled with it.

Eh, it might just be the computer freaking out a little bit. It does that.
I would just leave it for a little while and see if it comes back, it often does, but if it doesn’t try going into Disk Utility and hitting “repair/verify permissions”, which often fixes it.
As long as it’s functioning properly, though, I wouldn’t worry about it unless it becomes widespread to your other programs.
Try these.
If that doesn’t work you may need to run a disk check/repair at startup- let me know if you need to know how to do this.
@dverhey I don’t know how long it has been like that so I’d try fixing it.
@crisw I don’t use Snow Leopard, I’m Mac OS X 10.6.3.
@Tink
10.6.3 is Snow Leopard. 10.6 anything is Snow Leopard.
You need to run Software Update. There have been several major bug fixes, and you are a couple of releases behind. If you need instructions on how to run SWU, let me know.
@crisw It is? I’m a little new to this. Actually a lot of new.
I tried what @dverhey said with the Disk Utility clicking the repair button but it didn’t work.
I updated the software and now I have 10.6.5. What do I do now?
Have you tried the suggestions in the article I linked to?
I’m trying that right now but I can’t find the show icon preview box to uncheck.
To see the Show Icon Preview box-
• Open any window in the Finder, such as double-clicking on your hard disk
• Click on the icon at the top middle of the window that looks like a gear (or a flower!)
• Choose “Show View Options”
• And there it is!
Thank you!
Okay, now I’m stuck on the OnyX step, how would I do that? I already downloaded it but I don’t have the slightest idea as to how to use it to remove the system’s .DS_Store files.
I usually use Cocktail for this purpose.
If you download it, clearing the DS_Store files is under the Files menu. I would also run the Pilot option which will automatically fix lots of things.
Here is where you delete “DS_Store” files in Onyx. You’ll want to check the box for “display of folder content” and then put your Applications folder in the box.
I wouldn’t worry about Cocktail, it’s a bit pricey and you can do it in Onyx, it’s just not as smooth.
Was some other box supposed to come out while I was rebooting it? Because there wasn’t, and then I went to clear the cache and after the icon was still missing. Now I’m wondering if I did something wrong or skipped a step.
@dverhey
Cocktail is free to download and try.
@Tink
Which program were you using? I don’t quite understand what you are saying or what you were trying to do.
@crisw Sorry, I used OnyX since I had already downloaded it. In my previous post I was talking about the third step from the link you linked me to. I rebooted and started in safe mode, and the part I was asking about was where it says “from where you might try navigating to the folders with broken icons to see if they’re loading properly.” So my question is, was something supposed to pop up when I logged back in my computer after rebooting?
Then, after I restared it I opened OnyX again and went to go clear the cache like it said to do in the fourth step. After that I looked through my apps folder and the icon was still gone. Did I miss a step or do something wrong?
For your first question, no, nothing is supposed to pop up. It was just asking you to look in your Application folder and see if the icons are fixed.
For the second question, I am not familiar with OnyX, so perhaps the person ho recommended it can answer.
Have you tried clicking on the Time Machine icon? If so, what happens?
Oh okay.
When I click on it, it tells me I haven’t selected a location for Time Machine backups. Which is normal since I haven’t. That’s all though.
