How are candy canes wrapped?

Asked by LostInParadise (32169points) December 12th, 2010

I can’t imagine that they are shrink wrapped. It seems like the old problem of building a ship in a bottle. I am sure there must be some simple explanation.

Maybe they’re wrapped and then molded into the cane? I bet somewhere there is a video of them on a conveyor belt

They’re wrapped in a sheath of plastic which is crimped off on the ends while the candy is still warm. After they’re wrapped they’re bent into the cane shape.

You can see the entire production process here

Thanks all. So the candy canes actually are shrink wrapped, but while they are still warm and before they are bent. It is interesting to see what an elaborate process is required for making them. I wonder what other things we take for granted go through a multistage manufacturing process.

@LostInParadise :: I hate to link to Gizmodo but the videos about Lego being made are awesome.

@world_hello I used to work in an injection molding factory.. I dunno if it’s interesting or depressing that the same process that’s used for Legos is used for every small plastic thing… I made the lids for pepper tins. I would’ve rather made Legos.

That is actually depressing. From now on I will only season with salt.

i loveeeeeeee the way the narrator of that first video says candy cane :P cracks me up every time

@world_hello holy crap… that lego video was awesome. 65.6 square miles of bulk legos…. my mind is officially blown

like really try and picture that in your head. But instead of stacked neatly, what it would all look like laying in a giant pile. insane.

@world_hello , What is really amazing about the Lego factory is how automated it is. There are hardly any people required to manufacture and package the Lego sets.
