Do you know any old, unusual carol?

Asked by Christian95 (3263points) December 13th, 2010

In my English class Christmas project I have to find less known Christmas carol. Our teacher presented us as a model The Huron Carol.I liked it very much especially the part in Huron language.
So I also want to present an old, unusual carol, preferably in an unusual, old language but any language would do it.

Sung as Santa Clause is coming to town.

There wearing white wigs
there wearing red coats
you better lie low and burn all your notes
British troops are coming to town

Just watch that old church steeple
that’s my advice to you
If by land then you’ll see one light
If by sea then you’ll see two.
British troops are coming to town.

I love Pat a Pan recently redone by young American Idol contestant David Archuleta. According to wikipedia was first written in 1720. You can here the newer English Verson (first few lines of the song are in French) by Archuleta on youtube

NU ÄR DET JUL IGEN is a song Swedish carol we sang every Christmas Eve at our family party while my Grandmother was still alive. Even with the words printed on a paper it was near impossible to sing.

Nu är det jul igen
Och nu är det jul igen
Och julen varar väl till påska
Nu är det jul igen
Och nu är det jul igen
Och julen varar väl till påska
Men det var inte sant
Och det var inte sant
För däremellan kommer fasta
Och det var inte sant
Och det var inte sant
För däremellan kommer fasta

Nu är det jul igen
Och nu är det jul igen
Och julen varar väl till påska
Nu är det jul igen
Och nu är det jul igen
Och julen varar väl till påska
Men det var inte sant
Och det var inte sant
För däremellan kommer fasta
Och det var inte sant
Och det var inte sant
För däremellan kommer fasta

You might like Coventry Carol. You can see a British boys choir singing it on youtube here

Or the Sussex Carol here

Or the Wexford Carol here

Or my personal favorite In Dulci Jubilo here

Please check back in and let us know which one you pick : )

Ladies and gents, I present The Monkees singing the old Spanish carol Riu Chiu. A capella and live to film, yet. Take that, haters!

@aprilsimnel OMG! You keep getting me good. I totally have that EXACT song on the Xmas CD I made last year. I’m a huge Monkees fan and heard them do that song live! I’ve seen some and/or all of them at least 20 times and have had the good fortune to have met all 4 of them. Squeeeeee!

@Kardamom, you’re welcome. Sometimes I wish, though I’d be older now, that I was born/cognizant of the world when these cool things things were happening. I didn’t see The Electric Company until 1977 (I learned about that “Love of Chair” gag from the DVD), and The Monkees during the big rerun thing on MTV in the 80s (I ♥ Mike!)

When I was in high school, our Spanish teacher taught us one called “Ay Del Chiquirritin.” The melody is so catchy that I still hum it to myself 40 years later, even though I have long ago forgot the words.

@aprilsimnel Yay! Another Monkee fan!
