What are the best shoes for working in?

Asked by klutzaroo (4716points) December 13th, 2010

I work up to 12 hour shifts at a department store. I have a lot of foot issues and need good shoes to keep me happy while at work. They need to be stylish enough to not get me crap from my managers for completely ignoring fashion but the main factor is comfort.

I’ve been wearing Sketchers with a Dr Scholl’s arthritis insert in them, but they’re old and starting to fall apart. :(

You might want to consider Merrells. The first time I tried a pair on, it was love. They are now pretty much all I wear. This site can help you find a store nearby so you can check them out.

Birkenstocks. I have flat arches and even after 19 years, my Birkenstock Bostons are still my go to shoes if I know I’ll be on my feet for an extended time like you’re describing.

They have lots of styles and I’m sure you could find a model that would work with the dress code. Check them out on zappos for realistic photos and reviews, plus their customer service is really great.

I have a lot of foot pain and I second the Merrells. I just bought these and so far, I love them! They are honestly more supportive than my good tennis shoes. Even for my high arches.

Rockport Hands down one of the best stand on your feet all day long shoes ever made. Go to any trade show and I guarantee most of the veteran “boothers” are wearing Rockports! Check into arch supports too!

I loved wearing Doc Martens when I was working retail. They have a ton of different styles; it’s not all about the army-style boots anymore. Actually, a few of their ankle-boot styles are guaranteed for life! (Edit: it’s not just boots; they have shoes that are guaranteed as well.)
I had a coworker who swore by Clarks – she said that her feet didn’t hurt in them, even when she was pregnant.

You mentioned that you were wearing Skechers, so have you thought about their Shape-ups? They have tons of styles and the newer ones don’t even look like traditional Shape-ups, they’re less chunky I guess would be the way to put it. I have a pair that I wore to a job I had where I was standing a lot. They prevented my feet and back from hurting. They’re really great and do make standing for long periods of time a lot more tolerable.

I waer Clarks, Merrell, Saucony and use plastic heel cups in all of them.

The heel cups eliminate the burning sensation caused by plantar fascitis. I keep a pair in every shoe and my slippers.

These are inexpensive and worth their weight in gold.

@gailcalled Your link is broken… and I really wanted to see it!

I went Christmas shopping in my new Merrells today, and they were great!

You have to buy a dozen but that takes care of six pairs of shoes. Others in the family can use them also.

If this link doesn’t work, google “MF plastic heel cups.” There are many sources.

@gailcalled Thanks! Those thin plastic things really help, huh?

@augustlan: Suggested by my family practitioner. He kept them in stock. I wear them with everything but my Merrell heavily-cushioned walking shoes. Without them, my particular feet burn and ache (on the soles). They’re cheap enough to try out.
