What can you expect to pay for a GOOD vacuum cleaner?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) December 16th, 2010

I think it’s a new question…and this was inspired by a two year old question about a Dyson. After I read it again, I went looking online for Dysons…and they’re talking $300 – $400 at Sears. We had a salesman who came around a few months ago with a whoopy vacuum that was $2,500..(then, the longer he had to talk…. $2000, then $1500) I didn’t buy but kept him hanging, and hey…got the world vacuumed out of my rug and furniture as a demo! Should I just call the sales reps back once a month, or buy a GOOD vacuum? What should I expect to pay?

At least $500, but probably not more than $1,000 or $1,200. Do not buy from a home demo, there will be no back-up or warranty coverage. They might offer you a warranty, but you would be responsible for finding someone who would honor it.

Buy from a reputable shop.

I paid no more than 40 for each of my Roombas, used. And I love ‘em.

You can’t do better in quality than the right Dyson Vacuum to suit your needs. If you have pets, make sure you choose one suited to that. I’ve had one for two years and it’s great.

I have a second hand Rainbow and a Dyson Animal. Both are terrific vacuums, and both are pricey when purchased new.
The only thing I don’t like with the Dyson is there is no setting for the thickness of rugs or carpets.
The Rainbow is a hassle when you have to clean and dry it, but it does terrific work.
Look upwards of $500. Keep in mind that the cost is usually an indication of its value.

Get a Dyson.

The salesman at your home was undoubtedly a “Kirby” salesman – those (Kirby) vacuums are a scam, pure and simple. They are worth about $200, and the other 1300 to 1700 is the enormous profit the salesteam gets – those people are worse than used car salesmen.

And there’s no good reason to buy one of those antiquated vacuums. Get a Dyson – it works better at a fraction of the price.

Find a good deal on a Dyson at COSTCO – I bought my animal Dyson at Costco for under $300. It is AMAZING how well it works.

In reference to the other comment – the Dyson does not need a carpet height adjustment as it is automatic.

Consumer Reports had a report about this recently. Some of their top choices were listed at about $200.

Thank you so much! I’ve been thinking a good vac was way out of my price range..but maybe not!
