How can I find out if a highway pass is still closed?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) December 20th, 2010

I’m trying to find out if Monarch Pass in Colorado (Crested Butte/Gunnison area) is still closed or if they’ve managed to plow it open. How do I find out if it is? Where do I look online?

This site
Scroll the box on the right side. It looks like Monarch is open but hazardous travel.

@Blueroses Ok, so that means it’s open? I couldn’t tell if it was “Hazardous but open” or “hazardous and that’s why it’s closed, mf”.

If you click on Monarch pass in that scroll list it opens in a new window with current conditions.
As of 15 minutes ago, it is open with chains required for commercial vehicles.

@Blueroses I lurve you so much. That means my sissy can come home for Christmas!

@papayalily Yay! If she’s a CO gal, she’ll be fine on the pass. We are the world’s best winter drivers, right?!

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Blueroses According to every friend I have from out of town, no. Apparently, we are the world’s shittiest drivers who loose it every time there’s a hint of snow or rain. Course, I think what they mean is “everyone slows down and tries to not die, whereas I would rather keep going 75 in a blizzard”. Except, what I really think is that they’re romanticizing their home, like how old people do with the price of milk and common decency…

:) I like to wave at them after they’ve passed me and then I see them off in the ditch on the side.

@Blueroses The one friend who bitches the most about is also the most dangerous driver I’ve ever known, and I fear getting into a car with her…

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@BarnacleBill Yeah, but that doesn’t tell me if it’s open or not, just what it looks like. And it continues to prove my point that Monarch needs guard rails…

i love monarch pass and that ghost town near it

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@deni You mean Gunnison?

deni's avatar

@papayalily No I believe it was called Independence. Isn’t Gunnison still a town? I don’t know that area of the state very well but in October I was driving through and they had just gotten a few feet of snow, the roads were horrible and you know, of course there are no guard rails, it was freezing, and we round a bend and there is this little old ghost town. I was like WOAH! It blows my mind the conditions people were willing to live in back then, and I assume just for a shot at gold. End of my rant, thank you.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@deni Yeah, it’s still a town, I was just making a crack at it because I’ve just spent the past week hearing about how much Denver sucks and Gunnison rocks (which, statistically, isn’t at all true).

Poor Denver.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@deni It was really rough. She (my sister) kept talking about how everyone knows everyone, or knows of everyone, but you aren’t allowed to apply the same standards to all the people in a big city I’ve met because they once bagged my groceries or know of vaguely. And I’m sorry, but you really should have more than “the traffic sucks” to hate a city that much – of course there’s traffic, there’s always traffic when there’s people! Gunnison has no people, and no roads to get stuck on! Or hospitals, or movie theatres, or fast food places, or nice restaurants, or malls, or stores that have toilet paper in bulk… And she just hates it so much and won’t shut up, it’s like she’s saying that she doesn’t care enough about us for it to be worth it to her to put up with the traffic one week a year. /End rant

@papayalily she just has skyscraper envy. It’s a Freudian thing ;-)
