I think Twitter will implement some of Fluther’s ideas over to their site, probably add a QnA section.

Twitter is most likely going to use technology developed by Fluther to recommend particular tweets to users.

From the Twitter blog: When the Fluther team joins us they will focus on helping users discover the most relevant content on Twitter.

Another source is here; there are plenty of others.

From that: This acquisition could do well to move Twitter further in this direction and help to rise appropriate content to the top of users’ streams.

The Fluther website is remaining independent from Twitter. They only purchased Fluther’s staff, they didn’t purchase Fluther’s website. To quote the Fluther blog, ”We are planning to keep Fluther.com up and running, as it is, as a separate project from Twitter.” And to quote the Twitter blog, ”Their product, Fluther.com, is not part of the acquisition and will remain separate from Twitter.

So to answer your question, there’s no plan from Twitter regarding Fluther.

@absalom Exactly what technology did Fluther invent that Twitter wants?

Presumably it is the algorithms that directed the “Just for you” questions if they are looking to focus Twitter the way @absalom says.

Although that initially sounds independent, I don’t see how that practically works.

Considering that the developers are employed by another company, and it seems that ownership remains with those employed by Twitter, although it is clear that the site will not be developed, it seems likely that development might be prevented by such an arrangement.

Unless the manager and moderators can be completely independent, and work with tech developers willing to potentially move the site forward regardless of compensation, then it is not simply that the site will remain what it is now – but it is clear that it will fall behind.

That is my concern. It’s an initial concern, and I don’t make any claim that it’s inevitable – but it seems valid.

I think there’s a confusion about the so-called acquisition. As others have said, the website wasn’t acquired, only the team, which seems to be an awfully awkward way to say that they simply hired away the development team. As this article says, engineers need jobs.

@janbb: If Fluther were bringing their code along with them Twitter would have to buy Fluther, not just hire its development team.

@bob_ That article summed it up perfectly for me… It was kind of a mindfuck when I saw it on VentureBeat before I saw it on the Fluther blog – having never really seen Fluther mentioned in the blogosphere in any detail.

iamthemob's avatar

@bluemukaki – that may be standard practice…but couldn’t the code be licensed under a non-exclusivity clause in any agreement?

Dog's avatar

While I do not know any of the details it seems to me that Twitter does not need the same code on Fluther but instead wants our team to build them a code based on what they built here that would suit their needs.

janbb's avatar

@bluemukaki Oh – I didn’t think they were looking to duplicate the code, but wanted the guys to build something similar fitting to Twitter’s needs.

(Just read what @Dog said.)

So why does this mean we won’t see Dr J with his Santa Hat? I don’t get it.

janbb's avatar

@YARNLADY Apparently, nobody has the time, interest or perhaps legal stanidng to put the hat on Dr. J at the present time.

HEY!!!!!!!!

What are you all talking about?

JELLYCLAUS IS ALIVE! He is visiting threads and listening to our lists! He is commenting and spreading good cheer IN PERSON!!!! (or in squishy jelly)
Search in uses! PM him! Look for his posts!
I am loving this and think it is even better than him pasted lifelessly to the top of the page!

My only fear is that next Halloween he will show up as a Zombie and eat our brains!
