[NSFW] Is there any way to repair a silicone dildo?

Asked by MissAnthrope (21511points) December 23rd, 2010

I recently realized that my favorite (and most expensive) toy got damaged and is missing a small chunk. I’m assuming this is from my tossing it in a drawer. Apparently, you shouldn’t just toss expensive silicone sex toys in your drawer. WHO KNEW.

I’m wondering if there’s a repair kit or something? I know it’s just a sex toy, but it was given to me as a birthday gift by an ex-girlfriend and, ridiculously, has sentimental value. Not to mention, it wasn’t cheap. :\

@diavolobella – I’ll have to try and see what kind of silicone it is.. if it’s a match, I think that might work. If nothing else, reading that site was a giggle.

Keep the repaired part calm at least 12 hours to get cured completely

@MissAnthrope Because no one wants an upset dildo! LOL

MissAnthrope's avatar

Yes.. upset dildos really are the worst.

Did you notice what happens when you hover your cursor over the Honeydolls logo? LOL

I hope you can repair it! But on a lighter note, at least broken silicone wont leave any sharp edges, so I’m sure it’s still usable!

If I can’t repair it, it’s going to have be used with a condom from now on. Which is fine, really, as I use condoms anyway on my toys, but I’m kind of hoping to maintain the structural integrity and not have it lose any more out of that chunk. :\

I love you for asking this.

Silicone is a bitch to repair as anything that is remotely adhesive tends to also be hard; not a thing you want in certain places where there are a lot of nerve endings. There is a reason such things are molded in one piece.
Generally, the silicone used in a “boyfriend substitute” are of a softer, more life-like grade than any “patch kit” I can think of, and all will leave a crack that can easily be felt by areas more sensitive than a fingertip. Unless the rough spot provides extra stimulation…

I will do a little more research, but I fear the worst unless something new has come out since my wife had similar issues with her “companion” from the days when I worked swing-shift :/

MissAnthrope's avatar

Poop. :(

I just wrote to the company where she bought it, in hopes they can tell me what type of silicone it is. Best case scenario, I’m hoping to find a little patch kit and cover the rough spot. It’s okay as it is, but as time goes on, I know that spot is going to gradually get bigger. DAMN IT! It hadn’t even occurred to me that I should be careful.

And why’s it got to be the $100 one? Aaargh.

jerv's avatar

That is why my wife was hesitant to even buy one. Well, that along with what I said in your inbox.

As a machinist, I know quite a bit about materials and how important it is to match them for a patch job, and that is why I said what I said. Softer material may scratch and gouge easily, which is bad when you are working with one that costs thousands of dollars and must be smooth to within microns, and silicon is easier to damage than aircraft-grade aluminum. It is also bad when finish really matters, like for sex toys.

That is also why I personally treat some things with kid’s gloves. I have some books that are quite old yet look better after 20 years than many books do after 2.

As an engineer and chemistry major (although none of my experience was in the adult toy industry) I have to agree with @jerv on this. If you can get some sort of patch kit for very little money, it might be worth a try. Otherwise, it’s probably time to put the old boy out to pasture and get a new silicone schlong to replace him.

Noooooooooooooo….

I though the same about replacing my old PC, but was glad to take advantage of new technology. Yeah, I am a sentimental type who clung to the Kyosho Javelin my mother bought me when I was 14 even though the next twenty-plus years brought out newer, faster, better R/C 4WD buggies, but sometimes circumstances force us to move on.

BTW, plastic gears end to wear out quickly, and the increased friction in the gear train gets a little too warm, so do not go cheap if you go the battery-powered route or you will regret it. It is better to pay twice as much for something that lasts five times as long. And keep it where the cats can’t get at it!

Okay, for now…

The different kinds of silicone make the situation more complicated. I hadn’t realized there would be different kinds of silicone, but I guess that makes sense. I remembered the name of the toy, which helped me track down the manufacturer, and I’ve sent them an email. They’re on holiday until the beginning of January, so I will have to wait and see what they say.

I am kinda curious as to what toy this is exactly (sounds like there’s a little more to it than just a sentimental value if ya know what I mean ;)) ... and if you have a store (we have a place called Good Vibrations here) maybe you can call them and see what they recommend?
Good call with emailing the company though, with ANY luck they would offer a replacement (but I doubt it)

jerv's avatar

@Samantha_Rae Good call on Good Vibrations. Unfortunately, I somehow think that the thing is a little out of it’s warranty, especially since that generally only covers true manufacturing defects as opposed to accidental damage, wear and tear, or inherent design flaws.

Hmm. I’m surprised by these answers. I was always warned that once your toy has damage – you toss it. You lose the smooth exterior and suddenly there are nooks and crannies and rough spots for bacteria to hide in. Even with vigilant cleaning, it’s not smart. I realize it has sentimental value to you because of your previous relationship but to that I will only say this:

HOW MUCH SENTIMENTAL VALUE DOES YOUR VAGINA HAVE.

BE SAFE WITH YOUR LADY BITS.

:)

Or you could just keep it around, but not use it.

My internet went out at home and wasn’t fixed by the time I had to drive upstate for the family visit. So.. I believe this toy was bought at Good Vibrations and I did email them. In the process, I discovered the name of the company who makes them, so I sent them an email, too. GV wrote me back and said that there’s a lifetime guarantee on the toys made by this manufacturer, so I’m going to have to see if my ex has the receipt in her email still or what. I don’t know if I’ll even be eligible because of it being my fault, essentially, that I broke it.

I am totally going to keep using the toy for now. I’m hyper aware of germs and so, I know that it can’t be used as-is. No worries there. However, the damage is minor and a condom will totally take care of the issue. I use condoms on my toys anyway, so it’s no big deal.

I am with a lot of family right now, so I don’t want to pull up a picture.. just Google ‘Nexus dildo’. It has sentimental value to me because of who gave it to me, but it also is my favorite dildo because of the size and shape. I use it by myself more than my others. Not to mention, it’s fun when used for its intended purpose, as well. :)

@MissAnthrope Wow, that does seem like a great design.

Update: The manufacturer is back from their holiday and I was sent instructions on how to send it in to see if it qualified for replacement. The issue is that they require a receipt and seeing that this was bought 4 years ago, my ex no longer has the order info in her email and Good Vibes doesn’t list orders going back that far.

I wrote them back to explain this and they are so nice! They said that if I follow the instructions (basically sanitizing the toy and packaging it in a ziploc), I can send it back and they will send me a factory second as a replacement!

This is awesome news and I’m even more in love with the toy and the company (Vixen Creations).

@papayalily – Indeed. It’s the best toy I’ve ever owned and very much my favorite.
