Moise Tshombe, Hero or Zero?

Asked by noliverc (8points) December 24th, 2010

Moise Tshombe was a politician man who was very much implicated in the killing of Lumumba in 1961 when he was trying to cease the Katanga province from the rest of the Congo. And since then, opinions have been pretty much divided to question of knowing if he really was a hero for the Congo, or just a Hero for Himself or own wealth.

Well, I only know a smidge about the guy and the Congo in general because in my African History class we covered all of Africa and it was hard to go into too much depth, but I say zero. With him in power, Katanga wasn’t willing to submit to the new Congolese government, and a lot of stuff went screwy because of that.
Granted, Tshombe was anti-communist and everyone thought Lumumba was swinging in that direction, which may justify some of Tshombe’s actions, but I don’t like his politics.
Maybe I’m being all sentimental about things because I also saw the movie, which was fairly emotional for me. I don’t know. I must add, though, that they made Tshombe look like a total jerk in that movie. That might’ve colored my opinion slightly.
