@MrItty – I don’t think it is the place to preach. However, since you ask…....
Ecclesiastes 9:5 (New International Version, ©2010)
For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and even their name is forgotten.
Ezekiel 18:20 (New King James Version)
The soul who sins shall die.
Malachi 4:1 (New King James Version)
“For behold, the day is coming,
Burning like an oven,
And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble.
And the day which is coming shall burn them up,”
Says the LORD of hosts,
“ That will leave them neither root nor branch.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 (New King James Version)
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.
2 Peter 2:6 (New King James Version)
.... and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;
Sodom and Gomorrah are an example of what happens to those who are not saved- they are no longer burning, but are “ashes”. The fire burned until its job was done.
Psalm 6:5 (New King James Version)
For in death there is no remembrance of You;
In the grave who will give You thanks?
Psalm 31:17 (New King James Version)
Do not let me be ashamed, O LORD, for I have called upon You;
Let the wicked be ashamed;
Let them be silent in the grave.
From all of these passages, it is quite clear that there is no consciousness in death. So, what happens when one dies? They remain in a state of “sleep”, until the return of Jesus.
1 Thessalonians 4:15–18 (New King James Version)
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.
So what are the places that the bible refers to as Hell, Sheol, etc? These are all words for the grave, the hole in the ground where dead people go. If you read Marine Life’s passges with this in mind, they all make sense.
What does the bible mean when it says the fires of hell will burn forever and ever? Simply until its job is done. It will burn until the unsaved are destroyed, and then go out.
The bible is very clear that God is a God of love. This is entirely contradictory with the concept of eternal torture.
I hope this makes sense, and that you can see how unscriptural the teachings of hell and purgatory are. Happy to answer any questions or contradictions you might have.
