What's the keyboard short to temporarily disable video out: 10.5 Leopard?

Asked by Spargett (5398points) April 8th, 2008

My co-worker is about to give a keynote presentation. There was one before that was a few keys with F7. Can’t seem to figure it out in 10.5

It’s basically to cut the feed to the projector without unplugging the cable, so you can prepare something on your screen without the whole audience seeing your desktop.

I remember with Tiger that option + F7 or F8 refreshed the connection and detected the externally connected projector, but I don’t recall a key combo that enabled disconnection. What I used to do as a workaround was toggle mirroring on/off and with mirror mode off (and setting the 2nd screen to a default black wallpaper), I was able to mimick screen blanking/muting; of course, if your projector has a mute screen button this all is moot, but I’m assuming that in your case that’s not an option?

On the MacBook Pro it’s still the F7 key, “Toggle external on/off”, isn’t it? On mine F7 sequences through on, mirror, extend, and off. But mine is a year old, so not the brand new one with the black keyboard.

Use of option depends on if the “Use F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys” option is enabled.
