Is it very easy to have problems after an abortion and become infertile?

Asked by shoebox (517points) December 27th, 2010

I would like to know is it very easy or not at all to become infertile after an abortion?
What side affects and how badly can they be if you have a medical (taking a pill) or having a surgical abortion?

I welcome any ones opinion, and I understand if you think abortions are unethical, I feel the same but sometimes they can be the best option.. especially if you are too young, you can’t give any child a life if you have nothing to give, and sometimes giving them up for adoption is something you never want to do. honestly, when I have a child of my own I want to watch them grow up and give them all my love and support!

“Only rarely would an abortion cause problems in a subsequent pregnancy.

During a medical abortion, a woman takes oral medications — such as mifepristone, misoprostol or methotrexate — in early pregnancy to abort the fetus. Medical abortions haven’t been linked to infertility or complications in subsequent pregnancies.

During a surgical abortion, the fetus is removed from the uterus — often with a vacuum device, a syringe or a spoon-shaped instrument with a sharp edge (curette) — as an outpatient surgical procedure. Rarely, a surgical abortion may weaken the cervix or cause scarring on the inside of the uterus. If such damage occurs, surgery may be needed to correct the problems before a woman can conceive again or carry a subsequent pregnancy to term. ”

@marinelife sounds like a medical abortion is the best – thanks for the reply

@marinelife is referring to professionally supervised abortion. It’s important to remember that prior to legal abortions, many “back alley” or private amateur abortions caused severe problems such as infections and hemorrhaging that would be avoided in a medical setting.

I was one of the ‘lucky’ women back in 1975 that had a theraputic abortion within a few years of Roe Vs. Wade and the legalization of abortion.

Prior to that all abortion was illegal and carried much higher risks of complications.

While emotionally impactive for any sensitive woman, there is little risk of injury or infection.

I went on to have my daughter 12 years later with no ill effect.

It’s very rare to have a problem after an abortion. I completely support abortion, if you want one don’t let anyone cause you to feel badly. Medical abortions are done earlier in the pregnancy, some people prefer that because they don’t want to stay pregnant long enough to wait for a surgical one. Some people also have a better time accepting abortion when it is done on a fetus that is less developed. Surgical might be easier in terms of you go in, they do a quick procedure and it is over. Medical you wait for the meds to take effect, and start bleeding. But, if it were me I would go the medication route, especially if I found out very early in my pregnancy. There are people on fluther who have done both, hopefully they will answer too.

Here is a link to Planned Parenthood about abortion. It answers a lot of questions.

I’ve known more than a few people who were unable to get pregnant naturally after an abortion. I have no idea if there was a correlation or if it was just coincidence.

I have also heard that abortions can cause health issues, but I only thought that was only if you had multiple abortions.

But I would advise against it. Give the kid up for adoption.

I bet with some surgical abortions, something could go wrong and cause infertility…but I think the risk is extremely rare.
I’ve had two medical abortions and went on to have my second child without any issues.

@casheroo how many weeks pregnant were you when you had a medical abortion? – if you don’t mind me asking

JLeslie's avatar

@cletrans2col I would bet pregnancy and delivery is way more risky than an abortion.

@shoebox Where I live, you have to have them prior to I believe 7 weeks. I know I wasn’t further than 6–7 weeks when i had the medical abortions. You have to get them immediately.

The earlier the better, obviously.

I was about 7 weeks, I never could have done it if it was double that or more….eeeeeee.

I don’t believe in aborions, but if for some reason you have to have it, then do it. God will forgive you if you forgive yourself. You will see your children or child in heaven. And they’ll be happy to see you too.. Doctors have told me if i ever have an abortion or lost a baby, it would be hard for me to get pregnant. I think if you really believe in them, it will come true. Don’t believe in everything you hear, even if it comes froms Doc.‘s. Good luck!
