What is a good antivirus for windows?

Asked by annaott22 (516points) April 8th, 2008

Something is wrong with my computer. I’ve done everything I can to keep it up and going and it just keeps acting up. All I have on it that could possibly take up space is music and pictures but I just took off all my pics saved them to a disc and I have to keep my music in itunes. So could someone give me some advice???? Also I’ve had someone using my computer thats a freakin idiot and I think they downloaded some crap on here I’ve deleted everything I didn’t recognize and it’s still a little nuts. I know this isn’t a tech site but I value everyones opinion on here and would rather ask fluther.

AVG free version is pretty good but I just switched to Avast that is also free and it is much better. It can scan a lot more files and found a virus on my computer imbeded in area that AVG free can’t scan. Just download it on the net.

I’m also switching to avast here soon. It was highly recommended by a friend who is into IT for the same reason Bigg88 stated.

This is something you’re going to want to research a little bit. Simply running a free antivirus program is going to to little to nothing to combat the viruses and spyware already on your computer. They’re good at preventing issues but once your infected, you’ve got to be a little smarter about it. Trust me, you can get all the programs you want and they’ll think they’re finding and removing junk on your computer but they’re really doing next to nothing because these viruses hide very well.

the best thing to do is to re-format. If you have a virus getting a anti virus wont necessarily remove it. I would back up, scan the files to make sure they are clean then re install windows. I use kaspersky Internet secuirty. Its clean, has hourly updates and does not bog down your system like macafee or norton. Plus you can get a license for two years which is a good bonus.

Nod32 is the best paid one. Also, the best firewall is a free one, Comodo.

Try checking with your ISP. Some of them provide free virus scanners. Mine is comcast and they provide Mcafee for free to customers..

@Robby, it’s free for a reason… Mcaffe isn’t all that good. I tell all my customers that. Same thing with verizon. Countless machines would come in filled with rootkit trojans, smitfrud, and downloaders. Doesn’t say all that much for their “24/7” protection.

Unfortunately, AVG isn’t going to be free after the new version. Its going to have 30 Days and then you have to pay.Or so i heard and gathered from my fellow employees.

If you going to pay for something, NOD32 is the best in my personal opinion, and for something free, AntiVir i have been enjoying lately, and AVG till runs out, if it does.

Avast is the best. It’s great for finding viruses already there too.

Avast is great thanks for all of your answers!

Oh, and here’s a useful link, it’s a website that runs tests against popular AV programs to see which has the best detection rate, false positives, etc.
