Why won't you fill in your Fluther profile?

So often when I read an interesting question or answer, I will go to that person’s profile to get an idea of who they are and what they are about. Seems more and more are not giving any information. I can understand why you would not want to divulge personal facts, but come on, you are pretty safe if all you tell is your state (or country) and a little bit about you!

I really do think people feel weird about putting stuff down – it’s as if they can’t figure out what to put down that can even begin to encompass them or they think it’s stupid to do so. I think different people have different reasons but I agree with you: a person can at least put something, anything rather than nothing.
I don’t know what to say. I don’t really like to talk about myself that much, I guess. I figure it might be boring.
I agree. I wish they would put their state or at least their time zone. Sometimes knowing where a person is from gives me a little insight as to why they think a certain way. Without divulging their job, they could say artistic, good with numbers, works with animals, in the health care field, or something that gives a little clue about them.
My profile isn’t empty, and my location is in my topics – but I find it really hard to just talk about myself like that. It would be a different story if, say, there were fields to fill in, or something similar.
@TheOnlyNeffie I agree about it being less awkward if there were fields to fill in. That would be something of an ice breaker.
@diavolobella How could a little peek at you be boring?
@TheOnlyNeffie I think it used to be like that, fields to fill in. Much easier to just fill in the blanks.
@chyna I remember, at least, that there was a space to fill in your location. It was a little different, not too long ago. I just don’t know how to sit down and say “blah blah blah, this is me” without a little bit of coaxing.
@chyna I don’t know. I just never thought anyone would be interested. You can peek away now though, because I updated it! :)
I just went back to look at mine. I must’ve been drunk to say all of that!
Admittedly, I’m having fun reading everyone’s profiles now.
@chyna I think yours is really interesting!
I tried that once and found it caused more trouble than it was worth.
@Cruiser Would you mind elaborating on that? I mean, did it put your personal information/privacy in danger or something along those lines or something else?
I did.. I pretty much always had something there. Recently, I had a strong urge to delete everything, so I did. I haven’t been inspired or moved to replace the text I deleted, but I figured I could use the space constructively and added the moderator team email.
I liked when the profile had the field “Places I’ve lived” That made it easy to fill in.
@diavolobella Some people I met seemed to take certain elements and twist them around and manipulate a certain situation. I really have nothing to hide…well OK a few things, but it was just the added drama and or confusion that has resulted in a parred down version of Cruiserland.
@Cruiser I understand. Thank you for answering that.
I don’t care that much. And I am lazy. That is time I could use to play Plants vs Zombies.
I am going back now and reading, especially those of you who have commented.
@chyna – wow, if I were gay I would fall in love with you! at the very least, let’s be bbf!
@diavolobella – you have great words and you & your family sound so interesting, nothing boring there at all!
@Simone_De_Beauvoir – I have read yours numerous times and agree and second most of it and I especially love to watch your changing avatars. You and DominicX keep me entertained with your changing images.
@TheOnlyNeffie – you have me confused but so intrigued, your 2 links are so different, which is the real inside of you??? Need more info.
@Cruiser – I sort of remembering reading yours but I am old and it didn’t stick. I just looked again and you sound like an interesting guy. I watched part of cruisin and thought you were a chevy guy and then a mustang popped in just to confuse me. Anyhow, your profile is good but I am nosy, more more more, heheheh!
@MissAnthrope – we just had the conversation about your avatar and I love it, but I did notice the rest of your profile is pretty damned empty, comeon, fill it up, inquiring minds want to know
@worriedguy – Your profile is great, I can’t quite get a mental image of the lab equipment with Japanese art, but hey, eclectic is definitely the way to go. With the exception of the lab equipment which I wouldn’t know what to do with, the rest of your place sounds like I could move right in and be comfy!
@Not_the_CIA – hey you gotta admit, this is more interesting and engaging than Plants vs Zombies!
Thanks y’all ga’s all around. And the rest of you jellies, get to it, let us in on your secrets.
@rooeytoo can’t they both apply? The “Pretty” link really isn’t me, it is more or less a pep talk for me. (And anyone else that is as moved by it as I am.)
I’ll try to make a conscious effort to put a bit more of myself into my profile. I suppose I never thought anyone would care to read it.
I’m always disappointed when I click on someone’s profile to learn a bit more about them and it’s blank. Sometimes I’m curious about where the person is from, how old they are, if they are male or female, and sometimes I just find their posts interesting and want to know more!
I filled out my profile but want to change it. I don’t think it comes across the way I intended. It’s supposed to give the idea that even when people seem to fit a certain stereotype, they probably really don’t. I must have written that after one of those “omg parents and kids really suck today” questions, or maybe after reading too many “effing suburban parents” quips. ;)
I usually have in my profile a photo a song and a quote (usually Mark Twain) that fits my mood at the time:)
I’ve changed mine a few times, either by adding or taking away much. Back in my blogging days, I used to have my name and location posted. After returning to the professional world, I cut back on self-identifying info regarding anything Internet. Not that I don’t want to be known by others, I just don’t want my professional world involved with my private world. Even so, I just updated my Fluther profile FYI.
I just put random movie quotes, and that’s good enough for yall. I figure that I talk about myself quite enough in the questions anyway.
I don’t even know if mine is filled! I’ll have to look.
I recently removed all of my topics to stop getting so many questions in my inbox. It was unsuccessful.
I tried. I couldn’t think of anything to write that didn’t sound really stupid.
So here’s my reason: What I can put down will probably then seem like a bigger part of who I am than it really is. The few things I can put down that actually are that big a part of my life either make me sounds like a loser or like I have more authority in the field than I do. It also creates this sort of static person, and I’m more of the belief that people are flexible, fluid things whose identity changes from moment to moment. And I don’t really want to just fill out A/S/L/Job, because then it’s far too easy for someone to just dismiss me as one of the nameless, faceless, 24 year old female students instead of a complex human just like all the other jellies.
It takes me a while to figure out what to put in a profile for each new place, and it’s often different, tailored for the specific site in question. My Fluther profile has more about me than my profile in any other site I belong to.
I only filled it for the award.
Comments on your profile can be from simple to elaborate and they don’t necessarily have to be something personal. Find a quote that you like, or a song that you feel describes you, or even a simple—how do you do, I’m happy to have found Fluther and I think I’m going to like it here… anything, just don’t leave it blank!
Plus like @Lightlyseared said, fill it in for the award. You do like awards, don’t you.
I did have some basic info on mine but for personal reasons I’ve decided to erase it. I’m also not into poetry, linguistics, quotes or lines/words from songs so that does not appeal to me personally. I may add something again. On Sodahead I went into great detail to describe myself but not on Fluther or some of the other websites. I usually go into enough details about myself through my own posts.
I filled mine out to give a bit of insight but not give away much. I know, I get irritated if I take the trouble to look someone up and they have nothing.
I basically have nothing either, but my nothing comes with a smile
hey @rooeytoo I sent a reply to your pm and got an error and then a posted twice. Let me know if you did or didn’t get it, k?
I think I might have to go to sleep, or at least outside to breathe some air
My previous profile was rather sparse, but thanks to some of the posts I’ve read here, I’ve decided to add my general location.
However, I’m tempted to use profiles from fictitional characters instead of my own.
I could be any one of the following:
An unhappily married-with-children shoe salesman living in Chicago.
An unattached private eye living in a trailer on a parking lot by the beach.
A US marshal living in Dodge City.
A flying priest.
A fry cook who lives in a pineapple under the sea.
Profiles are easier to write when I copy them from the IMDb. ;-)
Mine is filled to capacity.
Sometimes I guess people wants to keep there identities a secret and filling out the profiles would give someone that they know a clue to their identity. Thats the only reason that I could think of.
Because when you read the answers your judgement of the answer is based more on the quality of the answer itself. The profiles mean nothing to me, I hardly read them.
@flo – this question is so old I forgot about it. Nonetheless thank you for your response. I see you do have your profile filled in, that is nice. I like to read profiles, I haven’t changed my mind since Dec 27, 2010!
You’re wecome. It is amazing to me how much bias plays a role in everyday life.
@flo yep and it is never going to change so I just live with it. Although I do have a built in bs detector which is rarely too far off the mark and I tend to follow that.
@rooeytoo I mean I don’t use profiles because I like to use blind test system.
