What do you put in that third canister?

Asked by Supacase (14573points) December 28th, 2010

Canisters usually come in sets of three. Flour and sugar are obvious for the largest two, but what do you put in the third one?

There is a set I want because of the kind of top they have, but I realized earlier today that they won’t look right because they are clear and I always put things like a bag of brown sugar (in the bag) or packs of sweetener in there.

The canister sets I’ve owned came in a set a four. I think originally the purpose was flour, sugar, coffee and tea. Over the years, I’ve kept a variety of things in them like rice, beans, garlic, ginger root, confectioner’s sugar and yes, Kool-Aid packets.

I’d put coffee, tea, or rice in it.

If I didn’t have kids, I’d put M&Ms in it. :)

If the lid is pretty air tight then coffee is a good idea… just about anything will work… even colored marbles would look cool if you have no food ideas! pasta would work or fresh herbs too.

Get some pretty wrapping paper—or a large repeating-design color printout of M&Ms—and line the third canister with it, design side facing out. Then you can put a bag of brown sugar, a box of Sweet’n’Low, extra Starbucks and Togo’s napkins, a lifetime supply of Qtips, or anything else you want in that third canister and nobody has to know.

since they are clear, how about macaroni or rainbow rotini?

Mine are tin, and also came in a set of 4 – flour, sugar, tea, coffee. I have a set of 4 plastic containers that hold brown sugar, powdered sugar, rice, and bags of oatmeal.

I have tea bags and breakfast bars in mine. My neighbor keeps cookies and crackers and mixed nuts in his. One of my friends keeps individually wrapped hard candies in hers. And another friend keeps psyllium husk in hers.

If I had an extra one that was clear, I might put dried red pepper flakes in one (I put that on all sorts of things and go through a lot of it) and dried apricots or dried cranberries in another. And any kind of nuts.

I put chocolate chips in my third one.

I don’t put anything in them usually. Mine are antiques and though they are labeled, they aren’t air tight so they are just for show.
