Is it better to seek out schools or studios?

Talk to the head of the art dept. at colleges.
Call the local universities and art schools. Check to see if there is a Models’ Guild in your area. Search for drawing groups in your area, often affiliated with galleries or museums.
Double check who you’re dealing with. Lots of black sheep taking advantage of young woman dreaming to become popular and famous.
I would like to point out that my interest in art modelling has nothing to with gaining any sort of popularity.
@gememers – Yes, and therefore it’s important to double check art modeling offers.
