Can I send e-mail from an Edge network?

Asked by BirdlegLeft (811points) April 9th, 2008 from iPhone

I’ve had my little iPhone for just over a month now. I am able to receive e-mail from anywhere, butcan only send from home when I’m connected to my wireless account. The same holds true for my laptop. I have a POP account. Do I need to change a setting, or am I not able to send?

I send and recieve email all the time, and I’m almost never connected to a wifi point. You shouldn’t need to change any settings.

Perhaps if you gave us the error that occurs when you try to send email from EDGE and maybe someone on here can help or direct you to where you can get help.

I get this:

The connection to the outgoing server smpt followed by server has failed.

Does that help?

this is probably a stupid question, but are you using the edge as your smtp? if not, then there’s your problem…make sure you’re using the correct address….isnt’ it cwmx.com?

I can only answer from my own personal experience, and others may be able to give a better answer, but I do recieve those errors from time to time, but generally when my connection to EDGE is weak. Usually it starts working again when signal gets stronger.

Another suggestion is to have your phone “forget” the account and set it up again.

What kind of account is it? Gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc?

outgoing smtp should just be your email outgoing server, my settings are as follows:

Incoming mail server:
in.email.com
<username> and <password>

Outgoing mail server:
out.email.com
<username> and <password>

oh wait, i get what youre talking about. i get that too a lot, the edge network loses connectivity a lot, sometimes to get it back i either turn on airplane mode then turn it off, or run safari and open a page, then try again, sometimes safari re enables edge if it crapped out

@ luminous- that happens to me too, airplane mode generally fixes it.

@ birdleg- are you trying to send email where your signal is strong? Try going to somewhere you get a strong signal, turn on airplane mode, wait a few seconds, then turn it off, and try sending then, if that doesn’t work, it may be your settings, although it doesn’t make much sense that it works when you’re on wifi but not EDGE…

Connection seems strong, but always the same error message. I have an earthlink account if that matters. I may just stop back at the Apple Store.

“The connection to the outgoing server smpt followed by server has failed.”

This is not an EDGE problem, it means your email settings are wrong. luminous00 has the correct directions.

Incoming mail server:
in.email.com
<username> and <password>

Outgoing mail server:
out.email.com
<username> and <password>

Just helped my brother solve this same issue with his MSN Live account (why? counterintuitive to have a MS email for an Apple product…oh well, to each his own) .

At any rate, click here. Hope that helps-it did in my case.

sndfreQ,

I walked through the set up on that link AFTER I talked with Earthlink. They we’re very helpful and resolved my issue within a few minutes.

Thanks for all those that chimed in. I appreciate it.
