[NSFW] I have writer's block regarding my blog. Any content suggestions or ways to spark inspiration?

Asked by Xena (382points) December 30th, 2010

I have a sex blog, which is more like erotica and a frank discussion of sexual topics, than it is porn or anything crass. Just to give you an idea of what I’m going for.. Intelligent, sexy (I prefer subtle to overt), imaginative, creative, and entertaining, of course.

The stuff I’ve written and posted so far is good, but man, I am having such a hard time coming up with new content. There are a lot of writing resources on the web, including tools to work around writer’s block, but none of them are very fitting for adult writing. I basically end up wasting a lot of time trying to find intelligent adult blogs to get inspired and I know there’s got to be an easier and more efficient way to go about this.

What topics would you enjoy reading about? I talk about my own experiences, as well as mull over various sex-related topics. In addition, I’ve just gotten a microphone and am considering doing podcasts because I have a nice voice, but again, no idea what the hell to talk about. :)

Anybody? I’d be grateful for an infusion of outside thoughts and ideas. Thanks!

Why don’t you go through the NSFW Q&As on this site if see if anything sparks your imagination?

Would you be willing to share the link to your blog so that I can read and possibly come up with ideas based on what is already written?

@marinelife – That’s a really good suggestion! Thank you.

@mrlaconic – I prefer to not advertise it, as I know from past blogs that as soon as the blog gets mixed up with my real life, or with people who know me, the more and more I find myself self-editing. Right now, I’m pretty free to talk about anything I want without worrying what people think.

@Xena Fair enough in that case I will keep thinking and let you know what I come up with but @marinelife suggestion was great place to start.

I would just forget about it for a while. Forcing creativity never really helps. When I give and stop trying I have 10 ideas in a few days.

@mrlaconic – Thank you. :)

@Not_the_CIA – I’m totally with you, but that is not a good solution for my writer’s block because if I don’t try to write or find inspiration, huge lengths of time will go by without my writing and that’s not a good way to build a consistent readership.

I don’t have any ads or anything, it’s all just about writing. I’m hoping to post maybe 2–3 times a week, which is a huge challenge for me. When left to my own devices, I mean.. it’s seriously sporadic.

@Xena – How long is your typical post? It might be easier to write frequent short ones that you don’t put much work into. If you feel each post has to be 3K words I could see how that is a problem.

Try and come at it from a different angle.

@Not_the_CIA – They have tended to be on the long side and you have a good point there. I’ve recently made a mental note to try shorter posts, as I know it’ll be easier. Less daunting to consider writing and more entertaining for my readers (they get more updates). I think this is the way to go.. shorter, more frequent posts. The browsing of the NSFW questions here is a brilliant idea and I may end up getting inspired that way.

@lloydbird – I see what you did there.

@Xena You saw that coming? ;-)

Watch Californication. It’s on SHO right now, and SHO is free for a couple of months.

That show WILL inspire you.

And if you’ve seen it, watch them again ;)
