Laptop that only does spreadsheets?
I am looking for a cheap “machine” that really does nothing but spreadsheets, sort of like those first word-processors. Doesn’t need any internet connection, doesn’t need to even be in color. Or does such a thing not exist?

The Google Chrome Notebook might be for you, but unfortunately it hasn’t been released to the public yet.
Your next best bet would be to salvage an old, possibly “virused up” PC laptop from Craigslist or eBay. Judging by your username, you’d most likely have no problem installing a clean copy of DSL or another lightweight Linux distro and running a simple spreadsheet application such as Gnumeric.
gnuru?
dont you mean guru?
I agree with @Vortico
@XOIIO “gnuru” is a play on words and was likely deliberate. In the Linux world, GNU is a recursive acronym that means “Gnu is Not Unix”. It’s kind of an inside joke to use it in titles and usernames, hence “Gnumeric” that @Vortico mentioned and @linuxgnuru‘s username.
@camertron
I thought I recognised GNU from somewhere! Very clever!
The real problem here is that there are few single-purpose items built anymore. TV remotes also control DVD players, and I have seen one with a built-in bottle opener. Phones have turned into mini-computers; I could do spreadsheets on my Droid X!
That means that Vortico is correct; the easiest and probably best way to do it is to get an old laptop, wipe it out, slap in a lightweight Linux distro, and go from there.
Oh, hey! DSL comes with Scheme In A Grid pre-installed, saving you a step!
