Does fabric softener work?

I got new sheets. They felt really soft in the package. Just washed them and put them on the bed. Not as soft as I thought. Good, high quality sheets – 500 thread count. How can I get them to be softer (other than repeated washings). Would fabric softener work?

Since we stopped using a seperate fabric conditioner I have noticed that my laundry isn’t as soft and is creating more static so I would have to say yes, it does work.
I do notice a difference when I use fabric softener in my laundry, the clothes are definitely softer.
I never used it growing up or in college. I moved in with my s/o and did the wash one day without softener. She looked at me like I was nuts. I didn’t think it worked, but it really does. It makes a major difference.
Agreed with others here.
I can’t do laundry without softener. It cuts static HUGELY, and it does make them feel softer. I suspect the only way to guarantee soft sheets IS the repeated washing, though.
side note for pet owners: If you 1. put liquid softener in a spray bottle and cut it with water 2. spray your carpet/couch/whatever porous surface 3. wait 10 minutes and vacuum, pet hair comes up much easier. It freshens the room nicely, too.
Be careful with dryer sheets as they coat the lint trap and can increase the risk of fire. If you use them, you need to scrub (soap and water) the lint trap to remove the build up of waxy stuff that is supposed to soften your clothes but also reduces the lint trap efficiency.
Yes. It makes a huge difference.
What is fabric softener? Is it full of chemicals? I try to use natural products when possible – is there such a thing as natural fabric softener?
