How can I tell if my inside geraniums need water or have too much water? Sun exposure?

I need some help figuring out if my geraniums are watered too little or too much. The symptoms seem to be the same: wilted leaves, yellow leaves that turn brown and die. By the time I re-water or dry them out, it’s too late. Am I missing some symptoms? I’m really tired of losing them! Also, what is the best sun direction for these plants to receive during the winter at an inside location to make them grow full and “close to the soil” instead of long and leggy?

I have mine in a window that gets very little sun in the winter. I water all my plants about 1–11/2 weeks tho sometimes a little longer, whoops! I just cut mine back if they get too leggy. I would bet you are watering too much.
This is an extremely helpful article, giving three diffferent ways to winter geraniums.
I haven’t had much luck bringing basil in over the winter, but have moved one of the plants into a sub-irregation planter made out of a 2 liter soft drink bottle, like this. I made a ball out of a 6” piece of fabric and tied it together with a 1” x 15” strip of fabric. I put the ends of the fabric through the neck of the soft drink bottle. Then I water the basil through the dirt, until the water reservoir has about 1” of water in it. The fabric strip acts as a wick to draw the fabric up into the soil, keeping it uniformly moist. I rewater when all the water is gone from the reservoir. So far, so good. I’ve not been able to cut basil, but I am getting new leaves along the stem, close to the soil.
I have successfully overwintered geraniums. I bring them in, give them a severe hair cut and then put in a room that is flooded with sunlight when the sun is out. Even on cloudy days there is reflected light. I might add a little Miracle Gro once during the winter.
I water only when the soil is dry to the touch. I have had very good luck.
