I am writing a book. What should be the boyfriend character's name?

Asked by m0r60n (210points) January 1st, 2011

Okay, I am writing a book and it’s in Winter, and the main character Emma’s best friend is in love with her, but she already has a boyfriend and the book is going to be called The Love War…

What should Emma’s last name be?
What should Emma’s boyfriend’s (his first name is Daniel) last name be?
What should Emma’s best friend (his first name is Mike)‘s last name be?

I agree with @faye. You must be so intimately close to your characters that you know them as well as your best friend. As well as your sister. Better than yourself. And their names are an essential part of that. Only you can say who they are and how they are known to the world.

Why even give them last names, if you have no reason behind them?
Some authors choose to just use initials when they don’t want to say something by giving a name or part of a name.

The last name isn’t important to the character at the beginning of the writing process. Wait until you finish the book and you’re really familiar with the characters. Something will naturally evolve; sometimes your characters will tell you their last name in the course of the story.

@BarnacleBill I agree

Find/Replace is your friend- I frequently change characters names when the story changes. But I also sometimes understand that you want a good name in the beginning to help you define the character in your mind. So yes, you should start writing without it- but it’s worth thinking about. When you meet someone in real life- don’t you often learn their first name? And then usually later, usually when you know them a little better, don’t you often learn their last name and start to build that association with that person? At some point, you might just call your old friend by his or her last name. With how important names are in life and stories it’s not trivial. Some characters it’s hard to grip until you know their names- but don’t let it stop you writing- as other people said you will likely figure it out as you write.

For first names, there’s tons of sites that list baby names and give historical meanings and ethnic popularity, etc.

Here’s a good one: http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/ because it lets you select by initial letter or letter combination and by gender.

I avoid using last names in stories because you never know if you might hit upon someone’s real name by accident.

I also tend to change my characters names as I’m writing a story, if I want to reinforce a certain ethnicity, nationality, and/or time period.

I usually go to baby name sites like @HungryGuy suggested. You need to decide on the character’s names yourself, but I totally know how you need name suggestions. A baby name directory is where to go.

I love the Glee, River, Hunt answer.

Another place to start is ethnic backgrounds- these days I try to be as accurate as possible and get a last name that can be traced to a specific place or ancestry. It can help you to think about the character’s history even if it’s not relevant to the story. If the name has to arbitrary, I will go this route so at least I know that it has some meaning if only to me.
