Adobe After Effects average duration.

Asked by Ducati_MST (90points) January 2nd, 2011

I’m a new user to AE and just learning the basics. Everything I know so far I have learned at lynda.com.

For experienced users I would like to know the average duration of video clips imported to AE for processing and post.

I’m guessing that the finished timeline of a work before export is maybe 15 seconds?

But I could be way off on this as I really am a total noob.

Thanks

I do some stuff that is over five minutes. That is why I have 8Gigs of RAM.

the timeline can be as long is you need it to be. but the longer it is and the more you’ve done to the clip, the longer it takes to render and export.

so if you don’t have tons of RAM and HD space, best to keep your clips shorter.

Thank you , Guys!

I wasn’t sure as to the reason of why keeping clip duration as brief as possible was due primarily to hardware capacity. In my case 8 GB memory and a 2.8 GHz Intel i7 processor….or for maybe another reason which I was not aware of.

In other words are you saying that importing video content to AE does not matter as to size but only to your computer’s capacity to render it?

The instructor at lynda.com mentioned that you should only be working with very brief (maybe 10 second) clips in AE.

im a web designer, not a visual effects person so im not hte top authority on this, but keeping clips short in my mind is purely for render/export speed.

8GB RAM and a 2.6GHz i7 will manage just fine with longer clips.
I’ve done 5 minute clips on 2GB RAM and a 1.56GHz Core 2 Duo macbook pro with no real issues.
