Can someone help me again with explaining awards?

Asked by JLeslie (65789points) January 2nd, 2011

I never look at mine, but then someone will mention awards, and I get curious again. Do we get anything for these awards we earn? Is it a status thing? What? What does it mean to you personally, and what does it mean for me practically here on fluther.

Thanks.

Practically speaking, they don’t mean anything. They’re just for fun. :)

I always thought that It determines what kind of food is available in the mansion… I’m hoping for Red Pistachios

JLeslie's avatar

@talljasperman I have never heard of a red pistachio.

marinelife's avatar

It don’t mean a thing.

If it ain’t got that swing…....

Did you come from the amazon Q&A site? I think they gave prizes for points. That is not the case here. I got a t-shirt for being a chat mod. That was all. And it was a nice surprise.

@Not_the_CIA: Gotcha.I thought that I recognized you.

They don’t mean anything to me, just something extra to pass the time…

I like looking at my awards. Hecks, I don’t get any in real life I might as well earn some for having fun.
Red Pistachios
The pistachio was dyed red many years ago. When the nut fell from the bushes in dry arid mountainous areas of iran and Turkey, the pistachio shell got stained. In order to cover the blemish, a New York importer started red dyeing the pistachio in the early 1950’s. By the 1980’s Californai had a large crop, but the tradition of dyeing the pistachio red continues to this day. There is no difference between the natural and the red colored pistachio – except looks

@AmWiser For some reason after reading your info on pistachios, I think I used to eat them red when I was little. I am not sure if that is a real memory, but I think it is? They probably stopped dying them after the red #2 scare, like M&M’s. Just a guess.

Just another way to have fun.
and I am in need of all the fun I can find

Kayak8's avatar

I can’t find red pistachios anymore—something about red dye number 7 or something…

talljasperman's avatar

@Kayak8 I can find red pistachios in Mac’s stores…but only in little bags.

AmWiser's avatar

@JLeslie @Kayak8 Come to think of it, I haven’t seen red pistachios for many years now. I guess it is because of the natural craze and eliminating dyes in foods. Anyway, all the red one’s did was stain your fingers and tongue.:o)

JLeslie's avatar

@AmWiser During the red dye number 2 scare many many red dyes were removed from foods, because of public perception, even if there was no known health problem with the other red dyes being used.

Shoot, my link is not working,

JLeslie's avatar

Here is another link to try for red dye #2

Awards are for winning – what else would they be for?

JLeslie's avatar

@YARNLADY I was hoping to cash them in for a tshirt or mug. Lol.

YARNLADY's avatar

@JLeslie I gave up hoping for that, and sent in my money. Now I hear some people are getting them free for going off the main page and joining a chat? That’s really not fair.

JLeslie's avatar

@YARNLADY I think my husband would leave me if I had a jelly shirt. He is so jealous of fluther already lol.

JLeslie's avatar

I still want one though, and a mug.

YARNLADY's avatar

@JLeslie I was the last member of my family to start computering. Everyone else was addicted for years before I finally succumbed.

augustlan's avatar

@YARNLADY No one gets one for joining a chat… all the mods (site or chat) get one for free.

YARNLADY's avatar

@augustlan Reading too fast, I missed the mod part.

talljasperman's avatar

@AmWiser I can taste the difference… or is it the salt?

janbb's avatar

@JLeslie I got one for my birthday last year – not from hubby, from my son.

Rarebear's avatar

If everybody knows they don’t mean anything and nobody pays attention to them, why have them?

janbb's avatar

@Rarebear Some people seem to like them and think they’re fun.

Rarebear's avatar

@janbb Fair enough. I just was responding to people on this thread who were saying that they don’t mean anything.

JLeslie's avatar

@Rarebear You know what is odd, I don’t really watch how much lurve I have. As in 10k, 20k. I do notice when a specific answer of mine gets lurve, and I like it. I never look at my awards, unless someone mentions the awards, and then I get curious (that maybe happens once every 3 or 4 months) but I guess it wold be cool to get one of every single typw of award. No real logic in it.

Rarebear's avatar

@JLeslie I don’t pay attention to lurve either, and I’m one of the ones who think the whole points/awards system is silly. Points don’t motivate me to come back here, people do.
