Can you be a Scientologist and believe in God?

Asked by Sunny2 (18852points) January 2nd, 2011

I don’t know anything much about Scientology, but am curious. What do Scientologists think about religion?

“Developed by L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology is a religion that offers a precise path leading to a complete and certain understanding of one’s true spiritual nature and one’s relationship to self, family, groups, Mankind, all life forms, the material universe, the spiritual universe and the Supreme Being.

Scientology addresses the spirit—not the body or mind—and believes that Man is far more than a product of his environment, or his genes.

Scientology comprises a body of knowledge which extends from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these are:

Man is an immortal spiritual being.

His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime.

His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized.

Scientology further holds Man to be basically good, and that his spiritual salvation depends upon himself, his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe.

Scientology is not a dogmatic religion in which one is asked to accept anything on faith alone. On the contrary, one discovers for oneself that the principles of Scientology are true by applying its principles and observing or experiencing the results.

The ultimate goal of Scientology is true spiritual enlightenment and freedom.”

I highly doubt it.

I’d stay away from Scientology. And all religions to be honest.

“Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (March 13, 1911 – January 24, 1986), better known by his pen name L. Ron Hubbard (and often referred by his initials, LRH),[2] was an American science fiction author…

That’s why. Science fiction writer who founded a cult.

Don’t know why anyone in their right mind would be interested in that.

In scientology, all religions on earth, excluding scientologogy of course, are false memories that came with the body thetans (the spirits of the aliens that the evil alien overlord Xenu dropped into the volcanoes and blew up with H bombs, which afterwards were collected by Xenu and programmed with these false beliefs) that inhabit the human host.
That is why they brainwash their victims (they call it “auditing”) to get rid of those thetans and their deceptive memory “engrams”.
Almost exactly like the christian claim that early non-judaic religions were created by Satan to be similar to judaism/christianity to lead people away from god.

tl;dr
The answer is a resounding “no”. Not for the “clears” anyway.

Yes, Scientology is essentially compatible with other religions. It has no dogma regarding “god”. Apparently, however, if you get into the higher / deeper levels of Scientology, the various creation myths of other religions may be, shall we say, “put to a test”.

I didn’t know they were atheists. But I do know they charge you a lot to belong to the organization. It’s not like you can just go to meetings and plop five bucks in the plate.

Scientology embraces aliens as the god being. Don’t look further into this, IMO, ridiculous thing- a money makey for L. RON.

Scientology is a cult. It was set up to make L. Ron Hubbard very rich, and portray him as a God. It did make him rich, but failed to make him immortal or even give him an exceptionally long life. He died in 1986 at the age of 74.

I think that you can be a good scientist and think that there is a possibility that there might be a God. Is there a way to prove that there isn’t a God? But I don’t think that a reasonable scientist can believe in any of the strange religions that are popular today or the ones that were popular in the past.

As far as Scientology is concerned. I’ve been down that road before. I took 6 mind “classes” at the “Church of Scientology” and it is all about total mind control. That is your mind under the Scientology’s control. I told them that I’m leaving and they did everything but tie me up to stop me. They called me constantly and sent me letters regularly for years until I moved out of that state. Stay far away from those crazy folks!

I suppose it’s fair to say, if you can believe Scientology, you can believe anything.

Yes, you can… As what I have know “God exist before time”. This means that that God is already exist before the the big bang. It’s like God->Time->Big Bang->Universe. Absolutely, you can.

@dominicdesilva Welcome to Fluther, but I’m sorry, How do you know God existed before the big bang. And how do you explain the fact that biblical literalists claim the Earth is about 6,000 years old while the scientific evidence at hand shows it to be 4.54 billion years old and Scientologists claim it 13 trillion years old. The three schools of thought (if you are generous enough to call cultists thinkers) are orders of magnitude off. They can’t be jammed into the same container by anyone governed by reason.

On the other hand, a significant number of right-wing conspiracy theorists are certain that the Seal Team 6 strike on Osama bin Laden never happened. And they simultaneously hold two conspiracy theories. One is that bin Laden was never killed and is still out there plotting his next attack. The other is he was killed in Afghanistan a decade ago and couldn’t possibly have been there when Seal Team 6 arrived to despatch him. And they believe BOTH of these mutually exclusive “theories” at the same time. So with that sort of irrational thinking, who knows what limits absurd beliefs may have? My guess is there are no limits. Once you abandon reason, human beliefs can get infinitely absurd.
