What is the world's largest freshwater animal?

Asked by Brian1946 (32638points) January 2nd, 2011

I guess that would be a fish that lives or can live in freshwater.
I think all aquatic mammals are exclusively marine, but I’m not sure.

The Wels is a good candidate. It is the largest fresh water fish in Europe anyway.
But the largest one would probably the Beluga.

I think the manatee is exclusively marine, but I could be wrong.

Even if they can also subsist in freshwater and can reach about 1,200 pounds (I think), I think some sturgeons can reach 3,250 pounds.

“There are freshwater dolphins in the amazon!”

I’ve seen pics of them. I think some of them are somewhat pink.
I’ll lurve you if you look up their size potential for me. :-)

I think I saw the same episode of RM. IIRC, that stingray was about 11 feet across. :-o

My guess would be some kind of sturgeon.

I take it you’re referring to fish or swimming things that are always in the water But depending on how you define “freshwater animals” I’d consider either a hippo or a crocodile.

The beluga sturgeon can reach 6000 pounds.

Hippopotamuses can weigh up to 4,500 kg which I think gives it the title of the largest freshwater animal when it comes to sheer mass. Fish wise it’s the Beluga Sturgeon
