Why is motherfucker an insult? Why is fatherfucker not?
What’s the logic behind the insult? You have sex with women who have given birth, and therefore you suck? I don’t follow.
And why the double standard?
All explanations and theories welcome.

The former implies incest, the latter is biologically unlikely.
Because, true to our sexist society, when you fuck a woman you’re fucking the man/men she is owned by (in this case, her son). When you fuck a man, you’re only fucking him, and he is owned by no one.
Fatherfucker is an insult. I’d find it insulting.
I don’t think there are real nefarious reasons why no one says “fatherfucker” except that it’s just weird to say. Try it out. It sounds soft.
Motherfucker is way more fun.
Seems like many curses have to do with degrading women. Son of bitch, motherfucker, whore, and so on. I guess in this case a man who would have sex with a mother, under the assumption a mother is married and virtuous, is immoral, and a personal afront against her husband.
Doesn’t “motherfucker” imply that one fucks one’s own mother? I’ve always thought that.
@Seelix I think we need to google. You got me thinking. Maybe you are right.
@Nullo Women can’t fuck their own fathers?
@papayalily Yes they can, and in certain states, ahem, WV, Tennessee it happens a lot. But I would call them girls, not women.
@chyna Is it happening when they’re underage and being molested, or when they’re in their 20s+ and consenting?
@papayalily @bob_ I expect that the original targets of the insult were male, you see.
@papayalily I think in the backwoods and hills they are being molested at an early age. Hopefully, less now than in the 50’s and 60’s.
@Nullo I would not be so quick to assume that – I’ve heard it at women just as many times as men.
I’ve always thought it implied incest, which would be a bad thing, obviously. However, with the phrase “bad ass motherfucker”, I think it’s supposed to be a good thing. In which case, it’s a person who screws someone else’s mother, I think. That’s what I assumed it meant, and when I hear it I always assume the mother is still married, for some bizarre reason. But this is just the circumstances I imagine when I hear the phrase.
In either case, being a motherfucker is just bad manners and therefore an insult.
I think also people add mother or mama to really piss off the man at the receiving end of the curse. You are not supposed to insult a person’s mother. Just the come back “your mama,” to antagonize someone or get back at someone demonstrates it. Kind of out of nowhere in my opinion.
I think they are both offensive and I see no reason to ever use them. Why would anyone want to or need too?
I have been guilty of using motherstupid, and now this has made me think how bad it sounds towards women. Maybe I will just stick to fuckkk-er in a high soft voice, whenever I think someone is being a piece of shit.
The real question is, why do people say that they are bad motherfuckers?
”Fear me, for not do I only engage in sexual intercourse with my mother, but I am bad at it!”
I wouldn’t brag about any of those things.
It’s a guy thing….really. It’s designed to simply piss another guy off. Challenging a man’s sexuality in any way is the surest way to do it. Also…it would be assumed that the man was making the advances and the woman falls for it, which is another reason “FF” wouldn’t work the same way as an insult between two woman.
@Nullo What do you mean “the latter is biologically unlikely” You lost me.
@papayalily Yes, now. But it’s an old insult.
@Dutchess_III Again, I am assuming a male target. Even the most favorable statistics do not suggest that the homosexual population exceeds ten percent of the whole.
Or it may simply have to do with the fact that we relate to our mothers differently than we do to our fathers, on account of gender roles.
Oddly and coincidentally, this question came up moments ago elsewhere on the internets in a conversation. Someone provided this link and I immediately thought of this question.
