What girls/women like the new style that has come out?
like all of the empire waste and baby doll shirts. I mean if your not skin and bones you look pregnant in them! I’m a curvy girl but not over weight and when I wear these clothes people ask me when I’m due because they cant see that I have a flat stomach under this trash bag designers call a shirt! Why are designers taking away clothes that show your figure! I can’t find anything I like anymore!

Oh and skinny jeans! with my big ol booty and legs. I look like a circus freak!
I love them. I’m not a stick but I just know how to dress. :)
they work best with skirts.
I can not stand them. It is hard to find cut, casual tops without the empire waist. Do not even get me started on how I would look in skinny jeans. They do look really cute on my daughter. She is really tall and thin.
Am I allowed to answer?
I think the high waist looks sexy.
If peedub can answer, so can I, haha. I think girls look good in them. Even the more curvier ladies.
On a side note @annaott22, my sister gets asked when she’s due all the time. Its so weird because she’s skinny everywhere but her belly. Its mean, but I call it her “beer belly”. I’m a jerk…
I think skinny jeans are cute but they look like hell on me! Just the new fashion of dull colors and baggy clothes are coming back in and I hate them I like bright colors and things that show my figure but I can only find those things at thrift stores(thats ok with me) but sometimes I want NEW clothes!
It really is a shame that society is the way it is… But if I were to see and know you, I would say differant. It just depends on the type of person you are…
Why don’t you just wear what you like? Am I totally out of it for saying this?
@ randy but I don’t have a “big belly” I have an hour glass figure but because of that if I wear bigger shirts it makes me look chubby.
@ peedub they don’t make what I like anymore! I like low cut tight shirts!
Hmmm, the best advice I can think of is maybe take up sewing and alter clothes to your likeing or make your own. I know where your coming from though. I’m a small guy so I have trouble finding clothes that fit how I like them.
I do make my own. I get a little tired of sewing all the time. I do like to go shopping too. The reason I was asking the main question is because I was wondering if I was the only person who felt this way.
Theres a similar problem for guys. I get large shirts and they fit around my torso the way I like, but they are too short. Then when I buy extra large the length is fine, but they are so baggy. Hollister sells shirts in the cut I like, but I hate the company so I have to settle with shirts that don’t fit as I’d want.
I don’t mind the skinny jeans (as long as they have a decent amount of stretch to them so I can actually move) but the baby-doll tops are starting to get old. I wish everything wasn’t so billow-y; it just adds unnecessary volume!!
I still hold to the fact that I love the babydoll cut. It looks great if you wear it right. Its cute, fluffy, and looks incredible with huge breasts.
Volume is rarely a bad thing, actually. Its usually very slimming if you pick the right fabric.
I think most of the empire waist tops and dresses look like maternity clothes. Some are cute, though. I think the key is that you have to have great posture—if you slouch, your belly pushes out and it looks sloppy.
Good point, Angelina. I hadn’t through of that.
I do a lot of yoga, so its not something that I really notice in myself, but it could really explain the problem a lot of girls have with them, (And why I like the cut so very much).
@delirium. What kind of skirt would you wear an empire-waist top with? I mean, what shape and length?
Some great fashion advice I heard once: if you want to lose ten pounds, stand up straight. The “ten pounds” measure is, of course, totally arbitrary. Rather, the point is that all women of all sizes look great if they hold themselves confidently with their shoulders back, bum tucked in, and neck elongated.
Puffy skirts, usually.
I’ll find a good example…
:D And I agree completely with that advice (about standing up straight). I am very picky about posture for that very reason.
I just feel like the baby-doll tops tend to flare out at my hips (the widest part of my body), making me look disproportionate. This might be due to the fact that I am 5’11 and most women’s clothing is designed for those that are slightly shorter.
What about the super low cut jeans that are worn and show “back cleavage” I never can get that.
I’ve been trying to avoid the ugly shapeless things this entire season and I’m finding that it’s actually having a positive effect on my finances since I just don’t shop as much. For my body type, I actually prefer empire waists as opposed to the potato sack look. I have a relatively flat stomach so I don’t worry too much about looking preggers (though I have been asked before, ugh), but my boobs are small so the babydoll dresses like this or this that have no waistband or empire waistband look awful on me.
I agree with what’s been said about the big flouncy tops looking best on stick-thin girls. I think that those clothes actually can make average-to-bigger sized ladies look terrible and they should be avoided at all costs if you’re over a certain size. There are ways to look so much better and flaunt your curvy bod!
For me personally, if I’m wearing a poofy top, I usually go for a tighter skirt (like a pencil skirt) or tighter jeans. Or I’ll do a slim blouse with a more flouncy skirt. I try not to do a poofy top with a flouncy skirt because it just looks kind of shapeless IMHO.
And also, I don’t know where you usually shop, but I’ve found that places like JCrew or Gap have more classic pieces as opposed to super trendy places like Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, or H&M. But actually, as I’m writing this I just looked at some dresses on urbanoutfitters.com and aside from the ones that I linked above, they look like a lot of them actually do have some shape! Hopefully the trends are a-changin’!
I love urban outfitters and forever 21, but I agree about the no waistband stuff looking awful.
I love forever 21 but I like solid colors no prints they have a lot of prints. I also like The Buckle it’s a little pricey but I love their jeans.
@ Angelina I cant quite tuck my but in and if I tried that and walking at the same time I would look like I had issues! lol I’m 5’4” 130 lbs and my measurement are 34,25,37 my husband tells me I’m shaped like a black girl and since I had the ol boob job it’s hard to find things i like any more because everything I like only comes in small (damn I should have went 2 sizes smaller) I want the 80’s fashion to come back! I do wear mini skirts high heels and leg warmers but all my tops are getting a little worn because I cant find new ones that look good! I’ll try urban outfitters. thanks for the input and if you know of any other places on the internet or mall type stores send me a link!
Well, in my opinion (though I’m a dude), I think that the style works, but sadly it’s promoted for all body types.
It’s an issue for dudes as well… Even me, tall and thin, struggle because what fits me well provides a ‘stylish fit’ for others, which is annoying.
Certain styles work for certain folks, and I think people need to try and find what’s best for their body type and run with that.
Well if they don’t sell for every body type then I’m not going to wear a dress or shirt that looks like a garbage bag. Nor will I pay money for it.
@anna: Have you tried Victoria’s Secret? It’s surprising how many cute clothes they have since I thought they were always just for bras and panties. Some of their stuff is a little bit sexpot, but if you have larger breasts, they might work well for you since most of the models are quite well-endowed in the chest area.
Also, this girl has a flickr page where she posts pictures of her daily outfit ensembles. I like looking at it to see how trendy things can go together and look cute. She also tells where she got her cute stuff. I hope it’s not weird that I’m posting her flickr page here…
Heck yeah! I forgot about Vicki’s! Duh Anna! and thanks for the flickr link!
What about this Spring’s Ankle-Pant??? WTF where I come from we call those “high-waters”...viva la fashion
Forgive my ignorance, but what are “empire waists”?
“type of dress or top where the waist line is raised above the natural waistline, sometimes as high as right below the bust. Best on slender-on-top or petite figures, the empire dress creates the illusion of length and camouflages a bottom-heavy figure or thick waist.”
Example: http://www.bridalwave.tv/2007/04/eugenia_couture.html
Thank you. I to have a friend who wears those, and she IS tiny, but they are adorable on her. So I think on the right body type they are good. On the wrong body type…... Its like size 24 spandex in the isles of Wal-mart. No no, noway!
