I’m listening to some Mahalia Jackson right now – my favorite.

The only one that comes to mind right now is also This Little Light of Mine. I think this version is sang by The Steeles.

Not sure if this is the best version because I don’t have sound right now, but “Poor Wayfaring Stranger” is one of my favorites

@Cruiser One of my favorite movies too – and the soundtrack is excellent. Many wonderful gospel songs. Do you know it @Jude ?

The Staple Singers – You Don’t Knock

Johnny Cash – Peace In The Valley

Thomas Dorsey – Precious Lord (I tried to find a really old version, but he’s still pretty good at age 81!)

@penguin. I did see Brother Where Are Though and I am a huge Alison Krauss fan. I do remember that song. :) I’ll have to check out the soundtrack again.

@Facade :) Made my morning. I love it.

I love this version of Amazing Grace. If you haven’t heard this, listen. Wintley Phipps is one of my all time favorites.

I really love this one.

I thought this song was old when I heard it as a kid, but it was produced in the late 70s in the old style. The singers weren’t young.

The Rough Side of the Mountain

And I gotta plug Aretha singing Old Landmark on Amazing Grace. Just Google her name and that song. Hooo! Saaaang it, ‘Reatha!

Supper Time…Jimmey Davis

@Roby when I was a young child, our local radio station played that song at their sign-off every evening at 8 p.m.

Michael Row Your Boat Ashore.
I never knew it was a religious song for years after I learned it out of my Pete Seger Songbook to play on my guitar.

bkcunningham's avatar

@Neizvestnaya Michael Row the Boat Ashore is an old African-American Spiritual and the words were first recorded by William Francis Allen in a book “Slave Songs” in 1867. Allen noted that this was a boat song sung to keep time when rowing from the islands on the banks of South Carolina and Virginia to the mainland.

@bkcunningham: Thanks for the bite of history, I still love that song :D
