Cut out the fat and calories and stick to an exercise routine. If she drinks sodas and eats sweets, she really needs to cut those out. I lost 10 lbs in one week just from drinking water instead of sodas.

Eat fewer calories than you expend, and you will lose weight.

That translates to eat healthy and exercise more.

Weight Watchers is a pretty good program if she needs help with the eating part.

Eat sensibly, lot’s of steamed veg & white meat…… exercise more at least once a day for twenty minutes with lots of vigour…. :-/
how is up to you but burn them calories away……. keep hydrated..

The bottom like is that you must take in less calories than you burn each day.

The good news is you get to choose how to do that. For me, counting calories is the easiest. Our bodies are pretty darned efficient. I find it much easier to not put the calories in in the first place than to try to burn off an excess with brutal aerobics. Your mileage may vary.

The sobering news is that women (especially those of us past middle age) need a lot of exercise to maintain weight loss- about 50 minutes 5 times a week.

Personally, I don’t count calories- I just upped my exercise- a lot- and started eating even healthier (I wasn’t eating badly to begin with; I am a vegetarian who loves to cook from scratch and I don’t eat much junk food.)

The key is finding an exercise you like and will keep on doing. For me, it’s bicycling.

Smaller portions of food + exercise = weight loss.

If she wants to see a dramatic change fairly fast then she should start running. She could do a couch to 5k programme where you start out very slowly and, through intervals, eventually build up to running 5k.

When I started that programme last winter I was surprised by how much weight I lost over a few months, starting in the first two weeks. I lost about 1 to 2 pounds a week. Not bad for 30 minutes worth of running/walking 3xs a week.

Injury waylaid me but I still run 3x a week.

My diet changed naturally. I felt awful on my runs unless I ate oatmeal and made sure I was getting lean meats in my diet.

Apart from illness, the only thing that works is to eat less and exercise more.

“If she wants to see a dramatic change fairly fast then she should start running.”

Running is not ideal for many people, especially if they really are overweight, due to the strains it produces on the joints. Biking, swimming, using an elliptical, and other less joint-straining exercises are often better for many people.

It’s true that more exercise OR less food will affect size.

Doing those things tend to be issues of habits, willpower, thought patterns (aka situations one has gotten oneself into).

I found that when I sorted out my thoughts and became more self-aware, I was more accurately aware of what I wanted to eat and how much, and lost lots of weight without exercising or dieting at all. I probably was eating less and better, and may have been a bit more active, but I wasn’t intentionally doing those things.

And more importantly, I got my life back, too.

Do like Forrest Gump did… start running and don’t stop!

While eat less and move more are completely correct, I have something to add. Your friend needs to find support for her efforts. Losing weight is not always an easy process and sometimes we need others to help us. I tried to lose weight a few times in my adult life but never kept it off. This last time, I found an online support group here and was successful. While I still have more to go, the first 70 pounds wouldn’t have gone without the help and support of my group.

Many people have success with Weight Watchers, TOPS and Overeaters Anonymous as places for support. I liked the online group because I didn’t have to run to meetings. The internet is always there.

Eat less, exercise more. This is the number one answer.
