What's your take on the fake glasses that are all the rage now?

Asked by Joker94 (8180points) January 4th, 2011

About a year and a half ago, these Buddy Holly-styled glasses started becoming insanely popular. You know the ones, the ones that actually don’t help your eyesight. They seem to be all the the rage among hipsters and scene kids, and I am actually growing to like them. What is your take? Do you like them? Hate them? Why?

Very odd to me. I’d give anything not to have to wear glasses to see, so I don’t know why someone would wear them if they didn’t have to. I understand it is for style, but find it silly.

I rarely see people wearing fake glasses with clear lenses in them….and there are a lot of hipsters around me! I dunno, I wear glasses, and I like them, but it seems that most people would rather wear contacts OR are happy not wearing any device to help their eyesight if they don’t have to. But if they want to, okay. I think people look better in glasses anyhow.

Way behind Asia…glassless frames and nerdy fake glasses have been the rage for a couple of years now-dare I say almost uncool now.

They were never cool.

It must be a local thing…

This drives me nuts too. I wear glasses in order to see. I pay a ton for them, and spend hours agonizing over the right frames to suit my face and my style. If I could afford laser surgery to fix my eyesight, I totally would. I love my glasses and I think I do pretty well in choosing frames that “fit”, but it’s just so much more convenient to not have to wear them.

I don’t get why people wear “fake” ones. It just really really bothers me.

The wearers are making a spectacle of themselves.

Ya that’s going around here too, in Ireland. I think they look kind of cool on famous people and models, but one of my class mates in college was wearing them and I almost laughed, it was like ‘do you realise your wearing these big black geeky glasses, coz it seems like you don’t’. But I did’t say anything, obviously.

Do you mean the ones that make the wearer look like the Pat character from SNL?

A year and a half ago? They were popular when I was in high school in the early ‘00’s. Wow, I feel old.
