How do you not develop the accent of the place you currently live?
If you don’t already have it? Is there a way to be around the people and not pick up their accent?

Not really. Your ear hears it and conforms.
I don’t have the accent or slang from the place I grew up. At all. Nope. I’m from Hawaii. I sound like I’m from Southern California.
I’ll tell ya, if you’re living somewhayah tempahrarily, you could probably avoid it if you make a wicked effaht to enunciate all of your words propahly.
(My accent didn’t go away or change when I lived in elsewhere from where I do. . . Which is Massachusetts, if you couldn’t tell.)
Accents are a funny thing. Some people assimilate the accent of their environment and others develop one during childhood that carries with them throughout their lives regardless of where they live.
As for me, I was born and raised in Texas but for some odd reason my accent sounds like I am a surf bum from California. I attribute all of those voice lessons from back in the day when I was trying to earn a living as a professional musician.
My aunt and uncle moved to South Carolina about 40 years ago from MA and RI and they still speak like they did before the move!
Av nee idea like. Just thowt ad pick it up as a gan alang, ya na worra mean?
@answerjill Perhaps it’s something about this area that leaves an impression? :)

@Taciturnu GORO!…....Giggling ones rectum off!! Forgive me for laughing but my example hails from the good old North East of England Town. As indeed do I….......bonny lass :¬)
Because I never wanted to sound like this. But I can converse in this way, because some of the older people can’t understand proper english. This teenager sounds dumb but that’s how they talk.
This Obama clip is funny… I swear he spoke pidgen at one point. Obama went to Puna Ho. That’s were my niece goes to school and she speaks pidgen. They have a nice fair every year, just now they pass out balloons with Obama’s face on it.
Hmm, I don’t think western Canadians have an accent, but Maritimers who come here don’t lose their accents.
I can do it if I stick a wad of chew tobacco in my maw.
