If you stop typing for a minute and just listen, what do you hear?

Asked by Taciturnu (6045points) January 6th, 2011

We all have background noises around us that we block out. If you pause and listen, what can you hear?

I’m sure the noises around us give away a lot of information about our location.

Absolutely nothing. The sounds of silence are very soothing.

Hinder, Nothin Good About Goodbye. But I can hear it while typing too.

ZAGWRITER's avatar

the fan in my computer and my kids complaining that I am ignoring them. I think.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I hear the furnace and also the water running, since someone just flushed the toilet upstairs. I also just heard a cabinet door open in the bathroom.

mrlaconic's avatar

The HVAC system in my building pumping air.

Something rumbling outside- snow removal? and kitty on the counter after her Temptations!

I can hear the unmistakeable sound of my son owning noobs on Xbox Live. Bless, following in Daddy’s footsteps :¬)

A jet airplane just flew over. Prrrrrrrrrmmmmmm

I am hearing the sound of a leaf blower as someone cleans out the gutters on the roof of the adjacent building.

It is noteworthy because it is usually very quiet and peaceful here.

My computer humming. My mom working in the kitchen. The little voice in my head telling me to get back to History. My sister listening to a cassette tape (Yes, we have a huge collection of them still. Most from before I was born.) in her room.

partyparty's avatar

I can hear my computer and one of the dogs snoring…... ah bliss!!

deni's avatar

Papa was a rolling stone. And now that it’s over, cars going by.

Kardamom's avatar

@partyparty Dogs (and cats) snoring is one of the cutest sounds in the world : )

partyparty's avatar

@Kardamom Yes it is… and the sound is so very relaxing for us humans LOLL

@lucillelucillelucille now all I can hear is that tune in my head…Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high….

Once of my external hard drives making loud lawn mower style sounds, and the base sounds from my neighbor’s TV.

My external hard drive started to make a very loud “I will be broken forever” sound, so I purchased another one and backed up all my files. That was over a year ago and the thing is still going. Odd.

My new bread machine! I’m baking my first ever loaf! :-)

LuckyGuy's avatar

The refrigerator and my pc fan.

Now it’s Eagles, Life in the Fast Lane. If I pause that all I hear usually is HVAC sounds. The building is supposed to be haunted, so I keep the music loud. I’ve heard stomping heavy footsteps, whisltling and distant laughing at times.

Seelix's avatar

The fan on my laptop cooling thingy.
Someone running water in the bathroom upstairs.
The chirp of the crosswalk signals outside.
Someone in the hall delivering flyers.
My cat purring in the chair over there.
That constant big-city hum of traffic and people and whatever the heck else is going on outside.
And someone in the apartment downstairs hammering something.
Oop, sirens of the fire truck going by.
It’s never silent here.

A fan, the sound of laughter muffled and distant, muffled footsteps, muffled voices, the heater makes a ringing sound, my own heartbeat, that’s what I heard right before I typed this out.

Taciturnu's avatar

I love the descriptions! @Kardamom made me chuckle with her attempt to recreate the sounds she was hearing. :)

Congrats on your bread @cubozoa! I’m sure it will turn out tasty!

@Adirondackwannabe Does the laughing/footsteps/whistling come from another apartment? Or is the source unknown?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Taciturnu The footsteps came from the floor above me right down the hallway running past my office. The other stuff I’ve never figured out. It’s a huge old office building and it is creepy lol.

Taciturnu's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Keep some garlic tied to your Star of David and cross hanging on your neck, and remember to throw holy water on your desk each morning. Don’t forget the salt in your pocket! ;) that is seriously eery, though…

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Taciturnu Not a bad idea. This is one creepy place. I’m headed out, bye.

josrific's avatar

The computer fan, my birds chirping my husband talking to customers in the other room and my daughter playing the Wii.

My professor talking about “idiomaticity” and basic word categories.

@Winters Your description of your sounds sounded like a wonderful poem. : )

Winters's avatar

@Kardamom thanks, I’ve been on a poetic streak recently ranging from text messages, to writing assignments, and now apparently fluther as well.

Kardamom's avatar

@Winters Well you’re doing a really great job. : )

gailcalled's avatar

The silence was just shattered by a few suspicious soft thumps.

pearls's avatar

My washing machine and radio.

Kardamom's avatar

Now I hear (and see) 2 really big racoons, one tabby cat (with a cataract in his eye) and a skunk in the backyard. They are having dinner. And the microwave just dinged on my left-over Mexican food. So I guess we’re all having dinner.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

The news going behind me, my puppy whining off and on, and my mom snoring.

Taciturnu's avatar

@gailcalled Did you find out what the suspicious thumps are?

@Kardamom Sounds like an interesting mix of animals in the backyard!

@ChocolateReigns Congrats on your puppy! :) How old and what breed?

gailcalled's avatar

@Taciturnu: It was Milo leaping from floor to stool to counter top to top of refrigerator to top of cupboard and then descending.

Now I am deafened by the sound of snow falling on snow.

ChocolateReigns's avatar

@Taciturnu We’ve actually had him for almost a year now. He turned a year old on Halloween. He’s half Cairn Terrier (Toto from the wizard of oz), ¼ Pomeranian, and ¼ Shi Tzu. He’s got every color of fur a dog can imaginably have in him.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I just tried it. I hear the refrigerator and air conditioner running.
