Why am I being Followed?

Asked by coffeenut (6174points) January 6th, 2011

Ok so there on the “My Profile” page…..there are a bunch of little tabs running across…...One says “people (0/6)” and in that tab it says: Filter: Following – Followers

So why follow someone on Fluther? Why do you follow someone?

I have tried it before and didn’t notice any difference between following and not?.....does it do something special?

I’m sure it says it somewhere but I’m too lazy to look…

I’m following you now. It is a collective within a collective. Like “friending” on facebook.

It gives more options to the “Questions for you” by showing some activity from people whose contributions you enjoy in addition to the topics you have listed for your interest.

wundayatta's avatar

It’s a way of filtering through jellies so you only get the questions from the ones you are most interested in. People follow you because they like what you say, or they just like you.

chyna's avatar

But even if you like someone, you don’t necessarily have to follow them. I really like @wundayatta, but am not following him.

Blueroses's avatar

The 0/6 is people you follow/people who follow you

Your second number went up when I followed you. Mine is 92/69 and since I like the second number, I hope it stays there a while. ^-^

And I couldn’t tell you whether I follow @chyna or not, but I am quite fond of her even if she hasn’t given me accounting lessons, like she promised ;-P

JilltheTooth's avatar

Yeah, she’s got Molly following you, Wundy, so be careful…

Fred931's avatar

Because I like you.

bump

wundayatta's avatar

Wait a minute dere, pardner. Are you telling me that Molly gets her own account? Don’t tell Milo or there will be hell to pay!

JilltheTooth's avatar

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Keep your voice down! Do you want everybody to know????

wundayatta's avatar

I don’t think I’m the one with the big voice, here. Just saying.

JilltheTooth's avatar

hey, at the moment I got no voice. It’s making me nuts.

But we digress

wundayatta's avatar

And here I thought something different was going on.

Blueroses's avatar

Ah, Mr. Wundy. Always the whispering flirt. You do know that putting things in whisper brackets doesn’t mean that the rest of us can’t hear you? ;-)

wundayatta's avatar

@Blueroses You do know we are typing on the internet, right? No one can hear me! And if they have ancient eyes like mine and don’t know how to increase font size, they can’t see me, either! ;-)

Blueroses's avatar

ha ha, carry on… I see nothing. We were talking about why we follow @coffeenut

wundayatta's avatar

I’ll follow anyone who is a nut, but I won’t necessarily follow them. If you follow me.

Blueroses's avatar

do I follow you? I should but then if you followed me back it would mess up my 69.

chyna's avatar

<——-Molly follows.

lillycoyote's avatar

I don’t know exactly why, but yes you very well maybe are being followed. I suggest you always keep an eye out, at least, and then perhaps get a restraining order, if it comes to that.

YARNLADY's avatar

To add to the questions that show up in the Questions for You section.

wundayatta's avatar

@Blueroses Mess up your 69? I’m afraid I don’t follow you. I thought 69 required 2, not 1. But maybe I’m old fashioned. These days, maybe 69 actually means 69… people, that is.

I’m going to bed now.

With my wife.

Hmph.

wundayatta's avatar

We better stop now. @coffeenut thinks we spammed her question (although she blames it all on me). She’s royally pissed. She said I was stupid. I didn’t disagree.

augustlan's avatar

When you click on the “Just for you” tab, you see two choices: “Recommended” and “From people you follow”. That’s the useful part of the feature. You can choose to see only questions from those you follow, if you like.

Fred931's avatar

@wundayatta Have you seen here profile pic? No hard feelings. :)

JilltheTooth's avatar

Not just you, @wundayatta , I am also a “Really useless human”. Which is just silly. Look at my picture. I’m a really useless dog.

coffeenut's avatar

why do you think I’m a “she”?

coffeenut's avatar

@JilltheTooth and @wundayatta

2 meta questions and the same two members…...

So Ya what would you do about it….

augustlan's avatar

@coffeenut Meta has very loose guidelines, but if you specify in your question that you’d like to keep the responses on-topic, we’ll try our best to keep it that way for you. :)

JilltheTooth's avatar

@coffeenut : You yourself said in the details of your Q that you’re “too lazy to look…” which indicated to me and I’m guessing a few others a level of informality. Which , of course, was contraindicated after the fact, by your pissy PM that required you push an extra button to make sure it was not private. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

augustlan's avatar

[mod says] Please take the bickering to PMs, preferably private ones. Thanks!

@coffeenut I think perhaps your topics were kind of funny, whimsical, silly, so that gave the impression, at least to me, that you were inviting other than serious answers. The way to avoid this in the future is to state in the details that you want only serious answers.
You could also have asked, when you first noticed this thread getting off topic, that the jellies stay on topic. Name calling is never a way to handle things on Fluther and is not appreciated.

I was too late to stop by and tell everyone to simmah. Sorry.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Nah, we’re done.

augustlan's avatar

[mod says] Ahem. To repeat: Please take the bickering to PMs, preferably private ones.

coffeenut's avatar

(coffeenut says)

What guideline says we can’t have a discussion about behavior in a question that has no Guidelines???

lol…No uneven moderation here….Remove one discussion…leave ANY other

augustlan's avatar

A [mod says] message should not be ignored. Once one is posted, anything after it that violates the [mod says] message will be removed. In any section. Back and forth bickering like this has no place on a public thread. If you wish to discuss it further, please send me a PM.

Lol…That’s great….
