What kind of white rice is best for a rice cooker?

Asked by Prosb (4286points) January 7th, 2011

My friend got me a steam rice cooker since, one of the only things I eat is plain white rice, like from a Chinese take-out place. I’m not sure which rice is the best to get the kind of end product I want (Which is fluffy and sticky). I’d appreciate any info related to this at all, thanks again.

I used to have a rice steamer and always used the regular long grain white rice.

I traveled in asia last year, and ate rice daily, one really cool serving thing was they would steam the rice in bamboo tubes and serve it that way. I am still trying to find a source of 2 inch raw bamboo to try to do this at home.

Personally I use Jasmine rice, it’s a long grain rice, it has the best taste in my book.

I think Basmati or Texmati has the best taste and texture. But if you really want one that is sticky you will probably want sushi rice or arborio (which is used in risotto)

Just curious as to why white rice is one of the only things you eat? Do you have allergies or a medical condition? Maybe we can give some suggestions.

Any medium grain white rice will come out the way you want it. Long grain rice is good but tends to be less sticky.

[Edit: Look for Cal-Rose rice. I’m not sure if that’s a brand or a variety.]

You can use any kind of rice in a rice cooker. It will be stickier if you use a little more water. East Asians generally prefer short or medium grain rice for everyday purposes. I think long grain rice is more popular among South Asians.

If you want sticky (or glutinous) rice, Japonica is good.

It’s not really a case of which rice is best for a rice steamer, it’s a case of which rice is best for the result you want. Japonica will stick together nicely (and is just generally rather nice too).

Try smaller bags of rice, available at asian supermarkets.

Sushi rice is what they call “sticky rice” in Thai restaurants. It’s my favorite :)

I like Tamanishiki Super Premium Short Grain Japanese rice. Like fluffy snow, kind of sticky, pure.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, @Kardamom The reason why rice is one of the only things I eat is because I seem to have a very limited ability to taste. Almost all tasty foods for most people are terrible to me. I hate bacon, and mashed potatoes (with or w/o gravy) are my arch nemesis. I tend to eat bland things with textures that I like, such as celery, pasta (plain), cucumbers, and cauliflower/broccoli. Also, every vegetable that I eat has to be eaten raw.

@Prosb That doesn’t sound very fun. It’s odd that you wouldn’t like mashed taters, but you do like broccoli (which a lot of people hate). Have you talked to your doctor about this prob? Not that I’m suggestion the marijuana, but they do give marinol pills to people who have appetite problems, I wonder if it would work for this. One of my friends also said that artichoke hearts stimulate appetite (her mom had cancer and lost her appetite and this seemed to help a little bit) At least you are eating veggies.

Do you like jello or jicama or bread or the white part of hard boiled eggs or water chestnuts?

Mashed potatoes = bad. Which components: potatoes, milk, butter, or salt?

I like parboiled rice. It doesn’t stick together.

Thai “Jasmine white scented rice”. The brand with the three elephants on the bag. Usually found in asian markets.
