How is Fluther different from other Q&A sites like formspring, quora etc.?

Asked by willtodler (19points) January 7th, 2011

I would like to know how is Fluther different from other Q&A sites such as Quora and Formspring.me. Also what are its success factors and where can it still improve?

Jesus, I posted this answer perfectly in a different question a couple weeks ago. Gimme a split second and I’ll be back.

I’m trying to look at vark.com, but it seems that, instead of posting a public question like on Fluther, the Aardvark service finds someone who matches topics of a question and is online to give a single answer.
Here, anyone can answer. Community is a huge part of what makes Fluther so awesome. Questions asked on Fluther start discussions, not a search for one person’s answer.

This was a comparison of Vark.com to Fluther, but I’m sure that I researched others, including Quora.com, which I think I found to be strict all around, which differs from Fluther in that Fluther allows askers to choose how their questions are answered (General [serious] or social [relaxed]).

On Formspring, I made an account and tried poking around, and I can only find 5 questions selected for me at random; no option to even ask anything (I don’t use social networking sites, and that might be the problem?) or search for more questions, as far as I can find. Here, the Ask Fluther button is on the home page, to give an example. I can’t see anyone else’s responses to my 5 questions, either.

First and foremost, Fluther is awesome.

(I looked at a few of the others before joining up here, and they did not interest me at all.)

Figured out more about Formspring.com

To ask a question, you have to search for people on social network sites. (ugh.)

They are the only people you can ask questions to, apparently, and whoever they are can only ask their friends.

WTF?! This is worse than Aardvark! The Vark.com service searches for one “perfect” person based on the topics you give about your question so that you can get the best possible answer. Formspring is just a friend asking another friend something that the other might or might not know.

That’s not Q&A; it is IM’ing.

Fluther allows anyone with an account to answer any question asked by the community. This allows for thoughtful (and not-so-thoughtful-but-still-fun) discussions and a sense of community and spirit that you won’t see there or on almost any other Q&A site.

@Fred931 Yes, definitely good answers! The community here is definitely one thing that separates Fluther from other Q&A sites.

Well, @willtodler, welcome aboard, and the basic answer is just that we’re funner than everybody else. Mind you, I’ve never been anywhere else, but my judgement is absolute and flawless, so this should help.

Also, we have better looking dogs on this site.

Welcome to Fluther @willtodler. Aside from technological differences here and there, the main thing that sets Fluther apart is our community. In short, it’s the people jellies! Enjoy.
