Do you use any kind of air fresheners in your home?

Asked by jca (36062points) January 9th, 2011

Do you use any air fresheners in your home? Candles, incense, scented oils, sticks, room sprays, potpourri, or common ones like Glade or Renuzit? Flowers?

I just open the windows and use a fan.

Yup, I have a smoke-eater thing that doesn’t really work, and a stick air freshener in the bathroom. We also keep a Febreze spray freshener in the bathroom because we don’t have a fan, and only one bathroom :)
I really like scented candles, for the smell and the atmosphere, but I don’t use them often because my cats like to jump on tables and whatnot.

And I smoke weed.

Yep, right now I am using Febreze’s Brazilian Carnival. It smells so pretty and makes you want to “taste the rainbow.”

I have a variety of scented candles and febreze anti-allergen for my furniture.

Yes, I burn candles and I have an Air-Wick plug in thing in the bathrooom. I spray Febreeze on the dog beds in between washings which annoys my dog to no end. She thinks she smells fine.

No. I hate air fresheners and perfume. And I avoid people who use ‘em. I’m not sure which is worse, someone who has doused themself in musk, or a smoker. Yikes!

I don’t like any chemical odorants. If there’s something stinky it either needs to be cleaned/washed or thrown out. Frash air does wonders.

I wouldn’t dream of making the atmosphere more toxic than it already is. Only in America is there dozens of choices of air fresheners. What a country.

For occasional litter box misses, I use water and white vinegar.

I have tons of incense and candles and oils. I have some fabreeze for when I really need it. I’ve tried those sticks, but they didn’t really do much after the first hour. I’m allergic to flowers.

we have potpourri and febreeze in the bathroom, occasionally use candles and scented oils, but you have to be careful with some artificial scents – they can be annoying and harmful:

Exposure to fragranced products has also been associated with asthma and asthmatic exacerbations, migraine headaches, mucosal symptoms, and contact allergy (e.g., Millqvist and Löwhagen, 1996; Kumar et al., 1995; Kelman, 2004; Elberling et al., 2005; Johansen, 2003; Rastogi et al., 2007)

Previous work by Professor Steinemann and a colleague found that nearly 38% of Americans report adverse effects when exposed to some kind of fragranced product.

The two which I use are: Air Scense (orange) It has no artificial ingredients or perfumes, just essential oils and it really works. Its expensive but it beats the hell out of that Lysol spray.
Calgon body mist in Morning Glory scent. It’s not really an air freshener but it is amazingly effective. It isn’t too overpowering and for those who can’t imagine what Morning Glory smells like (I know I could not recognize that scent) I have had more than one comment on how good it smells so I guess you just need to try it!
I also like to use my Oil Burner from Body Shop with orange scented oil. Smells amazing!

Since I have allergies, nope.
I have a hepa filter though.

gailcalled's avatar

@takaboom: What’s a hepa filter?

takaboom's avatar

@gailcalled
HEPA – high efficiency particulate air
they get rid of more dust particles, like the smaller ones that may be harder to get rid of.

I occasionally use Febreze on the couch cushions after I vaccuum them first. We have a cat and a 5 year old nephew that visits often, so sometimes they can accumulate stuff that could end up causing odors. So I try to nip it in the bud.

I also put ice cubes and a fresh cut lemon wedge down the garbage disposal every now and then.

Currently, if I didn’t scent-manage my room, it would smell kinda musty and funky, through no fault of my own. It’s a converted garage in a house that hasn’t been that well-maintained and when I go away for a few days and come back, bleh.

I love candles and I do have scented ones, but I rarely burn them because of my cat, who DID once catch her tail on fire from a candle. So, the candles are more for sexytimes.

I have Febreze spray in the bathroom because the fan is broken and one in my room for when the cat uses the box.. there’s no ventilation, really, and the smell lingers in a very unpleasant way.

I’m a huge fan of incense and I like the way the scent lingers after. When I go to Italy, I buy these great incense packs in the outdoor market for a euro each. It’s just about the only thing that’s cheaper there than it is here and I stock up a bit. My favorite one so far is called ‘Cannabis’, which I held off buying for a while because of the name and I also thought, why the hell would you make a pot-scented incense? Isn’t the point of incense to cover up the pot smell? Anyway, it smells nothing like it, just very light and kind of floral.

I use one in my cat’s bathroom. Which, unfortunately, is also my laundry room. :(

AmWiser's avatar

For my bedroom I like to use the Ionic Pro Air Purifier and for specific conditions I will sometimes use essential oils in a Aromatherpy Diffuser

@Austinlad I started using a different brand of cat litter called Litter Purrfect . So far I have like it better than any other litters with regards to eliminating odor. It is a clumping litter and has the faintest scent of lemongrass added to it. And my cat actually likes it (some he doesn’t). And we got it at Costco for about $8 for a container, which is about half the price of some of the other clumping litters.

Yes, I love pretty smells, use them all. As a matter of fact I have incense to use up. This is mostly for winter, in summer, I let summer in. Though we always have Febreeze in the bathroom. I love the xmas cranberry scent.

Kardamom's avatar

@faye oooooh, I didn’t know Febreze had a Xmas cranberry scent. I bet that smells marvelous!
I love cranberry anything.

We have matches in the bathroom for those moments that scent removal is needed. My husband is allergic to many perfumey scents, so we don’t use them. When he’s not around, I might light a cinnamon candle, but that’s about it. I especially don’t like those smells when I’m cooking. I also won’t use scented hand soap. Blech!

OpryLeigh's avatar

I use candles a lot and I also use a carpet cleaner and spray to eliminate pet smells.

I really love the Airwick Freshmatic. You can’t beat an air freshener that automatically sprays every 9, 17, or 30 mins!
