Trying to recall a long-time Mac (and now iPhone) writing app?
A few years ago I tried a rather spartan writing and/or note taking application that was essentially text-only, but hyperlinks could be created within the text, linking to other pages or notes created within the application. I’m pretty sure I tried an iPhone version recently but now cannot recall it. I’m currently Googling keywords, and checking App Store, iTunes and other app sites, but I’m not liking the search options I’m given at those sites. Any help appreciated.

I’m not sure I completely understand what it is you are looking for, but this was the first application that came to mind. I hope it is what you are looking for. WriteRoom
You might be thinking of Voodoo Pad from flying meat software. The guy who makes it is a really talented indie Mac developer. If it’s not the app you’re looking for, I would recommend it as a possible alternative (at least check out the free trial). It works well for me to sketch out ideas before I can forget them.
BBEdit and Textmate are two highly regarded text editors, that are mostly used for writing code.
That sounds a lot like VoodooPad. It’s not free, and I don’t know if it has an iPhone version (I think it does), but it’s the best in its trade.
And definitely a developer worth supporting. I’ve got a couple of Flying Meat SW’s titles.
Aha! THANK YOU @gorillapaws and @dverhey !! As soon as I saw the name I recognized it – it’s time for me to revisit this again after a long time. I want to improve my note-taking and idea-recording and need to try this again. ** Fluther rocks! **
@gorillapaws – May I inquire as to what sorts of ideas you commonly record with VoodooPad? If that’s private, then can you give me a glimpse of how you most commonly use the app, desktop or mobile version?
I’m planning on creating a mac app. I’ll make links for the various pieces of the project. For example, if I randomly think up a great marketing phrase to use, I’ll go to the marketing page and then create a link off of that to cover my idea and how it will work, what the phrase may be, or some alternatives. I have a page for name ideas for the app, I have a page dedicated to feature lists, and then each feature may have a page dealing with how that feature might work, and perhaps a second page discussing how I would actually create it in code. If I see a neat user interface idea, or control (such as a cool looking scroll bar) in another app, I can take a screenshot and then paste it into the appropriate section with some comments.
What’s really helpful is that it’s so non-linear, so when a random thought pops into my head, I can quickly find the right place to stash it and then go back to what I was doing without the fear of forgetting. It helps me organize my brain, and works well with the way I think (i.e. totally disorganized).
I use the desktop version, but I’m not thinking about picking up the mobile version. I just hate typing on iPhones/iPads.
“and works well with the way I think (i.e. totally disorganized).” – Haha; sounds like me!
Thanks so much for giving me a look into how you use VoodooPad. That’s my hope, capturing thoughts and ideas and relating/linking them in various ways. When going back to a “cold” idea I foresee putting it back into comprehensible context quickly, provided I’ve done the necessary linking.
I have no particular projects to apply this app to yet. I have to admit though that I do have a nagging need to organize my mundane to-do lists! If I link projects to their necessary purchases, and then to their corresponding stores, I’ll remember to buy/order what I need at one time. That’s where the mobile may come in handy for me.
Good luck with the app – will it be for visual creatives, or something else entirely?
