In college football, why do the wide-outs (ends) on offense point to the sideline.

when wide-outs (ends) set their position before the snap of the ball they point to the sideline. Why?

They are asking the refs if they are lined up in the correct position. You point to the ref, and he’ll nod if you’re okay, or motion you into the right spot if you’re not.

Right. They have to be a certain distance back from the line of scrimmage.
