Why won't my monitor wake from sleep mode?

Asked by trychvz (145points) January 9th, 2011

I was recently given a brand new Acer laptop and took it out of the box just a few days ago. Everything seemed to be working fine until I put it into sleep mode. When I tried to wake it up, the monitor stayed black. I know the computer itself is awake, though, because I am able to type in my password, hit enter, and hear the “log in” sound. But I can’t see anything! The only solution I’ve found is to hold the power button for ten seconds and then turn it on again. This can’t be good for the computer.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Usually laptops have a way to utilize an external display, sometimes this turns off the monitor that’s integrated.

Usually it’s some combination of a function key like ctrl-F9 or something similar. You may be able to tell from just the icons on the keys or it may be easier to break out the manual if you have it handy.

Also check brightness while you’re at it, sometimes you can turn it down all the way to black and it will seem to be off.

edit: thinking through this some more, also check power settings in the operating system

Thanks for your response.
I did check the brightness levels, but it has nothing to do with that.
The icons on the keys don’t seem to have anything to do with brightness or anything like that.
I haven’t even cracked open the manual yet, so I guess I’ll do that and see if I can find any help in there.

Try right-clicking on the desktop. There should be some options for video output.
