What makes a good sequel?

I was rereading Johnny the Homicidal Maniac recently, and I thought about how a sequel could pan out for it. At the same time, I realized that a sequel series could easily ruin the original, like so many sequels do. What exactly makes a good sequel? Does it have to be like the original? Or can it be good in a different way?

A good sequel needs its own story. It needs to be something that is gripping in its own right and doesn’t need the original. A good series, then, is one in which each installment stands on its own but is made even better when you have the whole picture.
I loved JtHM, too, by the way.
If you need a good follow-up to JTHM, try I Feel Sick..
In film, my favorite sequel is probably The Road Warrior or Aliens.
Both took elements from the original stories, empasized the emotional damage of the survivors, and showed terrors that were only hinted at in the original. They are both great films on their own, independent of the first films.
I was having this exact conversation with my partner yesterday, and in the end I could think of only three sequels that I thought were better than the original movie: Toy Story 2, Terminator 2 and Star Trek:Wrath of Khan. My partner added Mad Max to the list but I don’t recall seeing that.
Toy Story 2 was great, so was 3. @filmfann I’ve never seen either, I’m gonna add those to my list.
