What would you do if someone tried to "Mod" you in real life?
Lol first things first….Please put you fangs away and retract your claws, put the pitchfork down, put out the torch, and untie the noose…this in no way has anything to do with the Fluther mod team in any way shape or form thanks
So.. say you go to the mall one day and as you enter you notice a group of people running around to different shoppers doing something then running to the next….when they get to you they start naming different thing wrong with your hair/how your dressed/ and whatever else…..each time they say something they put a sticker on you….. lol How would you react?

Well, I believe around these parts “He was just asking for an ass kicking” is still a valid defense… ;)
I would be really annoyed, and ask them what in the world they are doing. I would probably go up to them and ask what exactly they are doing and why. If they said they were modding or something, I would probably think they were crazy and go away, or tell them “Do you not understand how annoying that is? What if someone tried to do that to you?” I don’t want to be covered in stickers!!
Well, as my dad always jokingly said, those guys would be picking themselves up off the ground feeling confused, because they wouldn’t have seen my fist coming.
I wouldn’t really do that, but I might have a few choice words for that real life mod team.
The evangelicals have been trying to do this for years…
I have a real life mod team in my head… damn those little voices
something i would possibly later regret. My Grandaddy, didn’t fight the fascists so i could be mobbed by a swarm of Judge(mental) fruit-bats.
Isn’t real life modding just our code of laws? If I was arrested for something I would assume that I did something against those laws. Alas ignorance of the law is not a valid defence.
A group of people better never get close enough to slap a sticker on me, unless they want to get hurt. And if they did, I would take it off and walk away. I would assume I’m around a bunch of 3rd graders.
@ucme I LOVE that poster!! love it love it love it!!
@nebule LOL I too have those little voices dammit!!!! They’re no fun!! <hugs>
@mammal LOL you really did make me just laugh out loud and just about choke on my cherry coke (hubby loves this stuff and I haven’t tried it before, anyone else think it tastes a bit like that cough medicine you got as a child? odd) because I was laughing so much <hugs> thank you honey you just made my day <hugs> brillliant!
I actually did have a couple of extremely toxic friends who did everything except cover me with the little stickers for a long time, and unfortunately I sadly put up with it. In my defence I did eventually manage to stop them by cutting them out of my life, but far later than I should have.
hugs xx
<runs towards @mammal hugs tightly and runs off again>
:-) xx
@bunnygrl Yeah lets just call it the cherry on top of the cream on top of the cake. How I see myself basically ;¬}
@ucme :-) brilliant!! I can always count on you for a smile to brighten the day, thank you <hugs> xx
We are modded in real life. We can’t do anything we want. We are constrained by the desires of others. Also law. Also other authority figures like parents and cops and teachers and bosses and on and on.
Most of us put up with it and modify our behavior. A few keep trying to push the envelope and mostly they get slapped in jail if they won’t modify themselves. Every society seems to develop a system for ensuring that folks adhere to the local culture. Mods are what fluther uses. As such, it’s a relatively benign form of moderation.
Guess I’d mod them all with a broken nose, a black eye, a missing tooth, cracked rib, etc.
@wundayatta: Don’t tell your wife, but I’m gonna kiss you! :-*
Isn’t this basically what happened to all of us in high school?
@wundayatta: Don’t tell my daughter, but so am I!
As @crazyivan said, this already goes on. If I don’t want to hear it, I walk away. If they persist, and actually put stuff on me or interfere in any other way and I am in a mall, as you suggest, I contact mall security and have them deal with it. If an individual or a group can’t behave in an appropriate fashion in an area they should be stopped or removed from that area.
@laureth yes! Isn’t this what happens to us every day- from our own little voices, societal norms, friends, family? But I’d have some words for those asses, stickers would be gone and I’d be asking the store wtf?
I can’t imagine the scenario you presented, but recently I was being “modded” by the SEARS customer service when we tried to make good on our warranty (when our dryer caught fire). I was so pissed- they tried to blame the fire on chemicals on the towels…there were no chemicals on the towels! All kinds of out of character thoughts popped up in my head from getting the mob involved to threatening to make my story go viral! It was all too much for one person to take on though as realistic as my vengeful ideas were, so I dropped the fight- besides, they finally conceded. As much as I wanted to fight, I was helpless. Everything depended on what they dictated. But I kept squeeking! Finally this squeeky wheel got the grease!
They would find me unmodable.
Just a thought, don’t we call real-life moderators “police officers”?
If a stranger at a mall physically assaulted me, I would call the police. If there was a warning sign at the door saying that by entering here, you agree to that sort of behavior, I would not go in.
@coffeenut: Why did you choose physical assault to liken to fluther’s moderation? I don’t know about you, but when I get moderated, a fist doesn’t come out of the screen and punch me. Then again, I haven’t updated firefox in a while…
@KatawaGrey and @JilltheTooth I’m a little slow on the uptake, as per usual. I don’t know what I did to inspire you all to kiss me, but I’m definitely enjoying it!
—Do you think kisses get modded?—
@wundayatta: Hehe, you said quite well how “moderation” works in real life. And I’m certainly not going to be the one to mod the kisses. :)
@KatawaGrey Really? You consider someone putting a sticker on you as assault?...lol
@coffeenut : In some states the definition of assault is aggressive confrontation, battery can be interpreted as aggressive unwanted physical contact. So you may be right. Assault may not have been the correct term for @KatawaGrey to use. She should have said “battery”.
I’d wonder ‘wtf’ for a little while, then I’d get mad, and then I’d most likely go tearing after them or something. That would annoy me.
@coffeenut: You’d be surprised at what some people consider assault. Then again, maybe not…
Assault and Battery: Defined as: “Two separate offenses against the person that when used in one expression may be defined as any unlawful and unpermitted touching of another. Assault is an act that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent, harmful, or offensive contact. The act consists of a threat of harm accompanied by an apparent, present ability to carry out the threat. Battery is a harmful or offensive touching of another.” from this site pretty much covers the acts you describe.
The reference to “modding” is just dumb.
