How much would you pay to live in a place that you love?
Inspired by this Yahoo article, what would you pay to live in a place that you love? Do you think she is crazy to want to live in NYC when it’s so expensive, when she could have more somewhere cheaper?

Nothing…. already live there A!
Her solution is insane, or at least in the long term. 50% of income is too much. When she is too old to live alone, she will have no savings and will have to go into state funded nursing homes at which point she will wish she had saved a little in her younger years.
Sure you can make sacrifices to be in a city you love, but that is (financially) too much.
In NYC you don’t need to have a car. Most people probably spend $500 a month or more on a car between the payment, gas, insurance and service. A subway/bus card in NYC is probably $75 a month more or less now.
My grandmother moved from the suburbs to the city in her late 70’s. Her back was having more trouble, and other health problem causing her some discomfort. In NYC her groceries were easily delivered, everything she needed was in close distance, or a bus or cab ride away. She had season tickets to the symphony and he oprah, and was able to get together with friends easily.
People who love the city love it, and it is worth living in smaller quarters to them. I would not want to live check to check in any circumstance. The expenses of living in NY might be out of reach for some people, but it is in reach for a lot of people also, they just have a different lifestyle.
3 more years on the mortgage, and it’s all mine, baby!
I live in a place that I love; the price is a really high school and real estate tax. The area is so sparsely populated and therefore has such small tax base, that we have to foot the bill for the maintenance of the 57 miles of charming unpaved roads.
Probably up to $3000 (if I had the money)/months for a 3 br apartment.
I would pay anything I have to live anywplace where someone I wanted to be with lives.
Right now my rent is half of my income. It’s nowhere near as much as hers, but I don’t work that much either. It’s worth it. What do I need money for? Food, cell phone, occasional entertainment or shopping….but I’m happy doing nothing because I love where I am and who I’m with. It also helps to have a rich boyfriend. I’m lucky.
I don’t think I would pay anything to live in a place I loved. I like it well enough where I live now. Now when the kids are through school, that’s another story. But we’ll see. I may still want to live here.
I live in a cottage in my moms backyard for free. She knows I am safe and I can help around the house. And she has type-2 diabetes so I want to keep an eye on that.
But I save a fuckload of money. I can spend a month in Costa Rica and not worry about the bill since I pay no rent.
I would pay a lot, and I will when it’s time to retire, because I want to live in beachfront property in San Diego.
