My cat licks my hair a lot and sometimes coughs while doing so...should I stop him?

Asked by deni (23141points) January 11th, 2011

I know I’m on a roll with stupid questions lately but this is legitimate I think. I came back from a 3 week vacation 6 days ago and since then (and even before that, but not as much) my cat is always licking me. At night, when he’s not sleeping on my head or hogging my pillow, he is licking my hair. It’s better than him sleeping on my face so I usually just let him and go to sleep. I admit it kind of feels good, too, lol. It’s soothing! But last night he would lick and then sneeze/cough on me. I don’t think it was a sneeze but it seemed like a mixture between that and a cough. It was weird. He never coughs up hairballs though so…should I make him stop? It feels like when he licks it pulls a few hairs out so they have to be going somewhere, and I don’t wake up with a pile of hair beside my head so….

I don’t want him to do this if hair is going to get intertwined with his stomach and intestines or something or cause any other problem…

Don’t laugh I’m serious

Your hair isn’t any worse than his hair – let him do it.

You can’t tell me not to laugh, I love this question as a follow up to your cactus one.
I agree with @papayalily and request a picture of your cat licking your hair in front of the lopsided cactus. I promise to put it as my avatar if you send it to me.

I had a kitten that did that and she would sneeze (or cough) every time., Maybe it’s your cats way to welcome you back. I know my cat was taken away from it’s mother too soon, and what they are actually doing is rooting for a nipple, it probably gives your cat a sense of security.

Yes, you should stop him.
It may sound “funny,” but licking your hair can lead to eating your hair, which is a compulsive behavior in cats. In fact, eating hair (other than their own) can be a sign of OCD or other anxiety disorders in cats.
