Why does my router had to be reset several times a day?

Asked by mcmanus72 (7points) January 11th, 2011

Several times a day our router ( linksys 2.4 GHz) will kick us off the net. We simply unplug and then plug the unit back in and everthing is fine. My questions are 1) is my unit out of date? and 2) can wifi from cell phones kick us off line? I ask question 2 because most of the time that we get kicked off line, our son is coming in from work and I guess his phone has auto wifi and I asume it looks for a signal and kicks us off. Is this possible? Thanks for your time.

Can’t answer your specific questions, but possibly you’re getting spikes in your electrical system.

Without looking at logs or what your ip config ends up looking like on pc after.
Sounds a bit odd and as @Austinlad mentions it could be power spikes, but it would autoconnect you after it was back available (about 30 seconds).
Have you done a hard reset on it? This will require you to set your wireless config back up.
If you can’t get through it with a hard reset (push button on back of router) I would look for a new router. They are relatively inexpensive and can get you new features and speed.

does your son have a nintendo wii or other game device that is wireless? I ask because my Aunt has wireless at her house and whenever her neighbors have their wii turned on she constantly drops. It’s solid the rest of the time.

A good rule of security in residential areas would be to not broadcast your SSID also. Then you will not get these rogue connections attempts and exposure.

Check to see if there is a pattern to these occurrences. My wi-fi kicks me off whenever I’m trying to load too many large pages at once (e.g., ten pages, each of which has 25+ images).

Thanks to you all for your input.
My son has a PS3 but that doesn’t seem to be the problem, The only thing I notice when I drop is the fact that about 99% of the time my son is either driving up in the driveway or either playing on his phone.
I really think it’s time for a new router. Any suggestions??

Before wasting your money, try updating your router’s firmware. Also check the model number online to see if it’s a common problem that might need a simple fix… like an alternative DNS or something. Most Linksys routers have all kinds of configuration options built in that can help alleviate the problem. Firmware update would be my first suggestion though. Just go to the Cisco/Linksys site and under support find your router make/model and they will have instructions. It’s not too difficult to figure out.

This is happening to me as well, but I have noticed that it only happens when the line is idle, as in during the day, when I’m at work for an extended period. If I’m home and off and on the computer, it stays up. My ISP is our cable provider, and I wonder if they don’t detect the service not being used, and put it sleep as a security measure.
