Does Anyone use the One-Handed Dvorak Keyboard Layout?

Asked by ctferrarajr (270points) January 11th, 2011

I have just recently begun using (or learning to use) the Dvorak keyboard as my main keyboard configuration. While doing lots of reasearch to find out what it is all about I came across almost nothing on the one handed versions, even though they are listed on most computer systems as options.

So my question is, does anyone use the one handed Dvorak keyboard layouts? I think it would be a cool thing to have one hand on the keyboard typing and one hand free for the mouse. It would also be cool to show off. Does ANYONE at all use it anymore? I did some pretty extensive research and have yet to find anyone that is currently using it.

My partner uses the Dvorak layout on her laptop, but not one handed. It drives me crazy every time I try to use it. Even with the stickers on the keys that show both configurations, I feel like I just learned to type again. That’s frustrating for someone who normally types 90+ words a minute.

i use it. i lost the use of my left hand for 6–8 months in an accident, so i learned it to keep pace (while also using dragon dictate a.k.a. the best thing that has ever been invented).

i’ve gone back to two-handed typing, but i still type about 70wpm on the one-handed dvorak (vs. 100wpm two-handed dvorak—i haven’t typed qwerty/azerty for many years).

amusingly, i sometimes type professional documents with a one-handed dvorak macbook air on my lap while i cruise down the freeway, with my other hand on the wheel. (i drove stick shift for many years, so now my right hand needs something to do. it’s like texting without ever looking at the screen!)
