Sneakers sounds similar to this, but they didn’t go through phones in a mall.

It was Hackers (1995). It was a garbage file. It was not in a mall but a train station.

When War Games(1983) was made the laptop was a high end, exotic device used by the military and NASA etc.

They didn’t make a sequel. The film Hackers 2 is not related to the original Hackers.

@talljasperman I read some reviews that war games 2 had bad acting in it, so I held off from getting it. Have you seen it?

Yes, Hackers. The first Angelina Jolie movie I saw and the male lead’s character’s hacker name was Zerocool. ( cool! )

Other movies of similar nature? Try the anime movie, Summer Wars. It’s a hoot. Great visuals. Although it may try your patience with its family drama sub-plot. Overall it’s mostly cute and funny.

Other possibles, Die Hard 4, The Thirteenth Floor and of course, Tron: Legacy.
