How often do you flag questions/answers? Does it drive the mods crazy when someone flags everything that is not up to Fluther standards?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) January 12th, 2011

I flag a lot of stuff throughout the day.
Every time I do it, I can’t help but imagine whichever mod happens to be online when my flags come through saying “jeez Neffie, get a life.” Although, I have NO idea if you can actually see who flagged it. Just a guess.

So. Do you flag a lot of posts? Questions or answers that aren’t really Fluther material? Spam? Trolls?
Do you ever think twice about flagging something?

Since that big long discussion a while back I don’t flag anything unless it is obviously spam. Although I never flagged anything before that big long discussion unless it was obviously spam.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@mrentropy I missed said discussion, apparently.
I am so glad to see you here!! :)

Seaofclouds's avatar

I flag spam, personal attacks, and things that don’t really meet the writing standards. I’ve never really thought about what the mods would think about the stuff I flag.

marinelife's avatar

I flag things when I think they need it. It is not all that often.

YARNLADY's avatar

I am a regular flagger, and I received PM’s from the mods when I was acting inappropriately.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@YARNLADY that’s good to know, actually. I know that I only flag things that should be taken down. Mostly spam. I think I flag some sort of spam every day. I just can’t help but wonder if someone on the other side wants to kick me for it. haha.

jaytkay's avatar

Do you ever think twice about flagging something?

I rarely think once about flagging something. Only spam.

I wonder if I get flagged. Is there an award for it?

mrentropy's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie :) And I’m glad to be here. Now I’m going to flag your question. Ha ha ha.

tinyfaery's avatar

I rarely flag anything. I doubt the mods get annoyed. You are helping make fluther a better place.

AmWiser's avatar

I’ve only flagged 2 or 3 times and they were out of anger. I see things I think should be flagged but I hesitate because I’m not really sure if I should or not.

Dog's avatar

Nope it never annoys me. Flags help us big time.
So much of the time we mods are popping in for just a few minutes. Having a flag is a huge time saver. I check the flags first then usually have time to scan. :)

Thanks Flaggers!

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Dog does it show you who flagged what?
@mrentropy you don’t mean it! :O

wilma's avatar

I rarely flag. I have a few times for obvious spam or very mean personal attacks.

Fred931's avatar

There’s a reason that there’s a rather long list of flag-category options, so I assume flagging can only be useful to help mods pick out anything that could be bad. I’m assuming all they have to do if they see an inappropriate flag is ignore/remove the indicator or whatnot.

Kayak8's avatar

I seem to have bursts of flagging and then I flag on flagging. My flagrant flagging is in direct proportion to the number of illiterate youthful users whose questions make no sense. Aside from that, I am pretty quiet in the flagging department.

mrentropy's avatar

bunch of flaggits.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

I do flag a lot, I think – I do know the mods know it’s me and I’m okay with that.

AmWiser's avatar

Sarcasm has been crafting a response…for the last 40 minutes. What do you think he’s gonna say?

Jude's avatar

I tend to flag spam or if a social question is in the general section.

SavoirFaire's avatar

I flag anything that I am confident doesn’t belong, though spam is the easiest. I have also flagged myself once when I wasn’t sure my response was within the guidelines.

@AmWiser I think he’s actually just been crafting the same response over and over again, in attempt to get it past the CIA. The trick is for him to [REDACTED].

Cruiser's avatar

I have a pretty thick skin and very little gets my undies in a bunch. I have been here just over a year and flagged one question….it was pretty darn rude.

AmWiser's avatar

@SavoirFaire :D :D :D Leave me alone with the [REDACTED] will ya!

Dutchess_III's avatar

What Amiwiser said 20 minutes ago! Somebody needs to flag Sarcasm for [Redacted]

faye's avatar

I rarely flag. Maybe I’m not payig close enough attention!!

cockswain's avatar

I always flag spam or horrible grammar, but almost nothing else. The few times I did flag something that bothered me, the mods didn’t do anything so I figured that’s just life.

Sarcasm's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie Yeah, we get an email alert that shows the quip, the author, the section it was in, the question title (with a link), and then “Flagged by [user] for [reason]” (e.g. “Flagged by Sarcasm for Off-topic”)

We love flags. Always. And we do (or I do, at least) make mental notes of our avid flaggers. And of course we do have the notifications all archived so we can go back and see how often some members flag It’s interesting to see, when members complain “Mods never moderate anything that needs to be modded!” how much they actually flag on their own. Generally, they don’t flag.
Flags are very helpful. Even with 15 pairs of eyes, we Mods can’t see everything. Flags give us more sets of eyes. as long as you think you’re flagging with good reason, never be afraid to flag “too much” because there’s no such thing.

I flag about 4 things per week.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’ve never flagged anything. I’m bad.

SavoirFaire's avatar

I see that @Sarcasm finally got his answer out from under the swimming pool and past the CIA. I told them I would not let him out of jail hell will just run.

prolificus's avatar

I’ve probably flagged less than 10 times since joining Fluther, more so since the big category changes. If I have a general Q, I’ll flag an answer if it really isn’t helpful. Generally I ignore most other flaggable (??) stuff unless it’s blatant.

Dutchess_III's avatar

FLAG! You’re it! Catch you guys on the rebound!

JLeslie's avatar

I rarely flag. I almost never flag an answer, maybe I have three times in all of the time I have been here, when it is something really awful.

I more often flag questions when written very poorly, maybe it works out to 2 or 3 a month? Probably not even.

augustlan's avatar

We love flags, for real. The only time it becomes an issue is if someone’s flagging tons of stuff that isn’t removable under our guidelines (like flagging a lot of “off-topic” answers in Social threads, for example). Even then, it’s no biggie… we just send that member a PM explaining that those things won’t be removed and why.

PS: We get a lot of witty comments on flags. Brightens up our day!

Dog's avatar

I love the funny comments!

FutureMemory's avatar

I get flagged far more often than I flag.

ucme's avatar

I’ve only ever flagged a question if I see what I perceive to be a glaring inconsistency. Maybe similar questions have been removed in the recent past & that strikes me as odd. Although my flagging & the example i’ve just given is an extremely rare event, thankfully.

SuperMouse's avatar

As the newest mod on the team I have to chime in and say I love flags. They really do help pick the bad apples and keep the site quality where everyone likes it to be.

JilltheTooth's avatar

I love this thread! Thanks, Neff! I go through wild flagging phases, never from malice, always if it’s obvious or I really think it might be questionable, then when I think I’m over-flagging, and they’ll just see me as “that pissy dog who doesn’t like anything,” Auggie or Dog will send me a lovely PM saying they are glad I do. They make me feel so special! :-)

Dog's avatar

@JilltheTooth ~Wait- I thought I was the pissy dog who doesn’t like anything. ;) But seriously you are one hell of a troll detector.

SavoirFaire's avatar

This thread has inspired me to flag more often, though now I’ll have to work on spicing up the comments I include when doing so.

And is there a reason we remove “bad apples” rather than “rotten fish”?

OpryLeigh's avatar

I don’t think I have ever flagged anything. If something irritates me about a question/answer I just ignore it.

JilltheTooth's avatar

It’s fun to write little notes on the flags. That’s one of the reasons I do it.
And @Dog , we are the BBs, after all!

Dog's avatar

@JilltheTooth That we are .. he he he.

Yay spiced up comments!
I like stinky fish too. (As a saying, not the real thing ~)

Not_the_CIA's avatar

I flag a lot. But I usually try to inject humor in the comments.

Mikewlf337's avatar

I don’t flag very often. I’ll only flag if the question or answer is very offensive. I would hate for this site to turn into answerbag. That site has a ton of trolls. Use to be an awesome site. Now alot of the good people came here.

AnonymousWoman's avatar

I don’t flag contributions that much on this site.
